My stepson specializes in fiberglass boat repairs. When he heard about this new class, he got excited because he said, "I have always wanted to build a boat, but I didn't think I could afford to build a 20-footer; I know I can afford to build a 14-footer." Regarding the minimum boat weight of 240 pounds, he said, "That's great, because it is a lot easier, and cheaper to build a heavy boat than a light boat."

How is it cheaper and easier to build a heavier boat? Doesn't this entail more materials, and thence more work to install all those materials? I'm trying to imagine something cheaper and easier than building a stich-and-glue plywood boat from ~8 sheets of plywood (8 is for the Q16, I don't know what the Q14 takes) ...but I'm coming up empty Could you have him clarify that statement for me?
