I would however split up sailarea into jib area and mainsail area, because both sails act differently. Example when a catrigged and sloop designs have equal sailarea's than teh catrigged boat will do slightly better upwind but the sloop will do much better downwind to such a magnitude that it more than compensates for it's loss uwind. Only exception to this is really light air where the possibly higher rig of the catrigged boat is much favored.
