The "X" is a cross, as far as I am concerned. Take a look at the Subaru WRX, rally cross racer. Isn't it a World Rally Cross car, WRX? And then there is the Los Angeles International Airport, LAX. Isn't it a cross-national airport or "Los Angeles Cross-national" (LAX)? Isn't the X in Xmas supposed to be a Cross?
