Wouter, I enjoyed you post, really gave me the experience of being there with you. I enjoy learning from your adventures.

I don't have lots of downwind experience in large waves. When you said:

"On the way back to our club, I was running really tired and misjudged a wave overtaking us from the rear. Our boat just broached and went over ever so slowly with us on the luff hull. There was simply no saving it, the wave simply overpowered the rudders"

Please elaborate on how you usually steer downwind in larger waves to avoid broaching. Do you usually head more downwind when the wave catches up to the transom even though the can plow the bow into the wave trough in order to prevent being rolled by the wave?
