Buntline Hitch A necessary knot for the Tornado type main halyard hook-and-ring is to use the Bunline Hitch on that ring. It's compact, strong, and easy to tie (if not always easy to untie, but I've never had a problem). Many use a bowline up there on that ring but it's bulky and gets in the way of the hooking and unhooking.
