The furling jib also functions as the forestay. Therefore it must stay on the boat to hold the mast up.

I purchased the Hobie "snorkel" to protect my jib from the elements when not in use. It does a good job keeping the sun and the rain off the jib. It is also a convenient storage bag and provides protection for the jib after tear-down of the boat.
