He obviously means that you would need to move the mainsheet slider (on the clew of the mainsail) farther forward (to reference #6?) so that you would be pulling the foot of the sail more aft, for a flatter sail that would allow the slot between jib and main to increase in size. Also that an easing of the jib sheet would also help open up that slot.

The goal is to have the wind's velocity and volume across the lee side of the sail to be as high as possible.
