What scale are you making it? Is it for display only, or do you plan to sail it R/C?

Building a plug / mold only makes sense if you plan to make multiple copies. It's very labor intensive.

Otherwise, make it out of a tight, fine-grained wood. Maple is too hard. Basswood is probably the best bet - virtually no grain and easy to shape.
