Great to meet you on Saturday. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> It's always good to put a face to the name. Hope you got heaps of good ideas from the 7 Mozzies that ventured out for the last Somers club race of the season.
The race provided lots of windshifts with heaps of lifts and knocks. Final result 1st: Jeremy Pearse (Lightning) 2nd: Mal Otto (Ottocraft) at 1/2 a boat length 3rd: Brian Gristwood (Risky Business) 3 second behind.
Hope the boys had fun playing in the mountains of seaweed. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Nice to meet your good self and the other Lads. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Picked up some good thoughts from all the boats, particularly the hinge for the mast. (I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds putting the mast up solo to be a fairly impossible task.) <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> I'll be making a few rigging changes once the repair job is done. I'll be having an aprehensive few days waiting for the quote to arrive. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
The boys did enjoy all the boats and the seaweed though I think several Kilos of it ended up in my car. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
I should be well back in action for the July series at McCrae and as the time gets closer I will post some dates and times etc. here to try and coax a few Mozzies to come over and show me how its done! Cheers

It would be a foam frame wouldn't it?
Is the deck flexing lots in that area? Can you hear it going crunch when you push down over the spot?
Decks aren't that hard to replace on a Mosquito, if you had to tool up for the job and buy bulk quantities of consumerables ( much cheaper that way), enough to keep the boat on the water for years, I would be surprised if it cost more then $500. Thats including buying a router and sander.
If you are going to race a plywood Mosquito you will need to aquire the skills sooner or later. If not it will be cheaper to buy a glass boat now.
The boats dont give us much choice sometimes on when the downtime will be. If you just want to go sailing glue some plywood over the affected area, I have seen boats sail a whole season with crunchy decks, often one of the stringers has cracked and is making lots of noise but it isn't that big of a deal. The deck will be destroyed during replacement anyway.
Better to sail a class like the Mozzy where you can come up with a sensible repair rather then some of the crazy fixes they come up with to repair Lasers and Hobies and remain within their class rules.

Thanks for the advice for those who gave it <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
My boat goes into the shop on Monday. The quote for both the repair and a professional paint job was good enough to tempt me.
While it's away I thought I'd do the rudders and boards myself ( to learn) and make some changes to the rigging in general.
My plan is to strip the paint off, fill any dings with epoxy filler, line the front and trailing edges with epoxy, sand smooth, and a 2 pack paint. Is this the way to go?
Also, Peter F. If you're about,
I want to do my centreboards the same as you have them. What did you use to line/support the hole that the rope goes through?
Cheers

I just kicked my son off the computer (11:15 pm Sunday) and saw your posting.
I recall lots of scepticism regarding glueing teflon plugs into anything. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
I just drilled the hole to be slightly smaller than the plug then filed it out on the outer faces to make a dovetail joint. I also filed down the centre of the plug to help complete the joint. I used epoxy filler to fill the cavity and so far it hasn't moved. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> The tapered slots leading to the centred hole would prevent any rotation once the board is in the case anyway.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Peter

With the time constraints if being a single dad, I've done the big wimp and I'm getting Matt Kelly at VSS( as recom. by Mattaipan) to do the Job. ( Oh the shame !!) <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> To further erode my "sailing manhood" I'm getting him to to a total strip and repaint at the same time.
I figured the purchase price of the boat together with the cost of this work has ended up being pretty good value for a relatively young boat with a brand new pro paint job and I really bought this boat to get me back on the water ASAP with a view to upgrading in 2-3 seasons.
I am at least going to do the boards and rudders myself and have a spare rudder which I will use for a dummy run this very weekend. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
As I had to take all the fittings off anyway, I'm taking the opportunity to move and replace a few things and do away with some. I'm going to start with the simplest of cat-rigged setups and look and learn from others in the fleet over next season.
I'm hopeful I'll be up and running for the Sauna Sail.

I've got the girl back, but as you probably worked out by my "no show", not in time for the Sauna Sail.
Looks pretty good, with her stylish, white on white colour scheme!<img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I sent you a PM re doing my boards as you have done, as I thought the subject would hold little interest for general viewing.
Can't believe how much paint was on them. Reckon I'll get some serious weight of the boat when its all gone. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I'll have all the fittings back on and boards done in time for some "brass monkey"<img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> sailing in July at McCrae, and do the rudders in time for the new season, although I am considering some Boyer rudders if the budget allows as my current ones are showing their age.
Cheers

Think I'll focus on staying upright and finishing before worrying about how fast I'm going, but I do thank you for the optimistic appraisal.<img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
The flip side of a well presented and equipped boat, sailing one up, is that when you're looking at everyone's transoms, there's only the skipper left to blame!<img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

thought I'd post a photo of the boat, post paint job, mid re-fit, just for fun. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Notice the very clever blending of Northane basic white, on a background of Northane basic white.
Thought I'd do the foils in Northane basic white for some contrast <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
