I've just set up my 5.2 and trying to sort it out. First sail yesterday, dang quick with a bit of breeze! There seems to be no method of holding the daggerboard up. I see airborne has grommets in his tramp for a bungie and roller for side support. I don't have those holes. what was initially used?

Also, the rudder return shock cord... do most use that or switch to the positive up line like airborne? That just seems like another line to deal with.

thanks

Clayton

I have a 5.2 and love the boat so congrats on getting one and starting to sail it!

For the daggers, the bungees like airborne's boat are the best way and the easiest on the boards and wells, but they were originally designed with a shock cord that ran from the top of the daggerboard to a little clip that is located just in front of the crossbar.

As for the rudders, I use the shock cord, but it can be annoying, but also it is nice to not have to worry about them once you uncleat the rudders.

The 5.2 is a blast to solo! I am sure that you will have a blast with the boat. There are a fair number in the midwest, we are talking about getting together with all the 5.2's somwewhere in Texas sometime. You should come!

The 5.2 we just set up also has bungees running from the top of the board to hooks in front of the cross bar, works fine.

Hey Doug, Just wondering if that invite is open to anyone? I just purchased an H16 and need all the help I can get! I really don't think I could make it this weekend anyway, heading over to the Rush concert in Big D. Maybe you can keep us posted on other weekends. I am in NE Texas and would love to try my hand at sailing the bay.

Thanks,

Walter

OH, do not consider me a pro... I am far from it! I just know a thing or two about the 5.2. There is a guy around here who knows what he is doing but it definently is not me.

I can sure enough get you sailing and started racing but that is about the extent of my knowledge.

I like the pull up system for the rudders better then the bungee cord system. When I am coming ashore all I do is uncleat the pull-up line and come on in. The rudders stay down until they start hitting the ground and slowly start coming up. I have full steering all the way to shore with no damage to the rudders

Open to all. We are a yacht club with out a club house, BUT it was voted #2 place to sail in US sometime back. Our site is www.tcdyc.com and there are directions to get here in the FAQ section. The help day will be to help ALL newbies and slight newbies get there boats looked at and tweaked. Look me up. This is me and I have a Mystere 4.3 #149.

Clayton:

Good to hear you're still out there goofing off with this and that kind of sailing.

Great minds must think alike.

What's better than a Stiletto 27 for cruising, camping and such and a 5.2 for "waaahoo" sailing.

I hate that little "clippy" thing on my 5.2.

I've ripped more shorts and wet suits on that silly thing.

I also worry about loosing the board, altogether, in a capsize or turtle.

Besides that, the stretched cord is always in my way.

I'm experimenting with two approaches.

One is to add a bit of carpet to the well, to keep the board in place. Simple, straightforward, easy and inexpensive.

The second is to use a system like the old Freestyle 474 used. They installed a grommet in the tramp just for and aft of the board. To these they cut a piece of pvc pipe just longer than the board is wide (front to back) and ran a bungee cord through the pipe and secured both ends of the bungee, one end through one grommet and the other through the other.

They put just enough tension on the bungee to hold the board at any desired length

To install the board one just slides the board into the loop formed by the bungee and pvc and then one uses the board to lever the board into the well.

The resulting tension holds the board in place.

Again, cheap, easy and straight forward.

Let use know what you come up with.

Thanks to all. You are right Tom, A stiletto and a 5.2 is not a bad combination.

The setup you talked about is the same airborne has on his 5.2 (he has pics posted here somewhere). I don't have the grommets in the tramp (Yet) so I'll probably be doing a setup like my old TheMightyHobie18 with the shock cord forward to keep pressure.

time to go sailing!

You don't have to have grommets on the tramp, I have little eyes placed just inside of the daggerboards connected to the tramp slides. Then I have the bungees with the pvc holding the boards. It is really nice and works well.

Thanks, that looks like the ticket! Great pic.

I'll work on that when we get back home. Just got back in from sailing. Ya know, its not too bad here in Florida!

Sailing was great today. I've got pics but didn't bring the patch cable to up load them. Unfortunately that will have to wait till Sunday or so.
I have one pic... see attached.

I replaced my main halyard and jib sheets today. Still working the kinks out. But so far she's real nice. Just trying not to break anything yet .

Hey Clayton, I recognize that photo! I believe that boat was on eBay. I contacted the owner and bid on it also. You got a great cat. I found a very nice 1990 model H16 near Austin that I purchased shortly after bidding ended on the Nacra. Hope you enjoy it...............and I write that with all sincerity.....no sarcasm!
