Winds were about 20knots waves were about 1-2 feet. There we were, flying a hull catching a hobie 16 and all of a sudden CRACK!!!

After restoring the 5.2 over the winter and putting more money in it then it is worth, I still don't regret anything.
My son and I were having the time of our lives when it broke and I don't know how much more time I will have with him. He is a senior this year and going off to collage to texas A&M to become a 3rd mate and on to a captain. So if it had to break it was the best time possible and no one was hurt.

So if anybody needs any almost new nacra 5.2 parts let me know.

Do you know why or how this happened? I need to know how to prevent this!

And I might be interested in some parts, if the price is right I might just buy what is left off you. Send me a PM to talk about it.

All you need is a port hull and you are back in business.

The starboard hull has two 4" holes also.

Youch, I didn't see that untill I looked again, was that where your feet went when the port hull broke? Well, you have lots of parts there to sell, maybe you can recoupe some of the investment. So sorry, it was a beautiful restoration.

No doubt. Truly a beautiful restoration and sad to see.

My son and I were trapped out. I was at the rear beam and my son was by the starboard side stay. Needless to say, he went flying forward when the hull snapped. We did not pitch pole or anything, it just sat there floating on 1 1/2 hulls for about 5 min. before the port filled enough to sink. When it did as it was sinking we just climbed on the starboard as it rolled.

Thanks for the kind words from everyone.

As a postmortem, looking at the spider cracks and the irregular tearing, it looks like the inside top edge of the hull collapsed leading to the failure.

That does seem to be the most appropriate way for a cat to go. So much better then rotting away in the back of a yard.
Sorry to see such a nice rebuild die though.

Normal wear and tear or "internal vice" are not covered under insurance in most instances. Check your policy.

Dude, just slap some duct tape on that, and you're good to go.... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Airborne,
What happened to that broken-off bow section? Do you still have it?

I'm thinking that somebody who has some land available should start a cat cemetery -- not where boats are actually buried, but some identifying part(s)of the boat are set up like headstones, and with some basic information about the boat class and history of the specific boat and how and when it was born and died.

It would be nice to have a place where all the cat designs that have ever been conceived and built can be memorialized.

I first thought about this when we were at Vancouver, BC, at the Jericho Sailing Center back in the early 1990's. I have never seen so many cats in one place, and most of them had not moved for years. Grass growing tall around them. I took video of numerous cats that I had never heard of before, maybe one-offs. I hope I still have that video somewhere.

I just think it would be great to have some kind of central place, with the "cemetery" and a catamaran museum, maybe, too.

As it is, manufacturers modify, discontinue, destroy molds, and home builders/designers come up with prototypes that never go anywhere because either they are no good or nobody knows about them.....and history slips away.

Funny you should mention that, I went to the insurance company on thursday to insure it but the secretary said the agent would have to take pictures of it and that the pictures that I had in hand would not work. He HAD to take the pictures. She also said he would not be back in the office till mon. So I said to the secretary that I would come back on mon. The break happened on that Saturday.

As a wise man once said "Don't put off 'til tomorrow what you can do today. For tomorrow may be too late ..."
