Mary,

you might want to re-check that URL. It took me to a holding page, not your frontpage..

Interesting. I have never seen that page before, and it is not one of ours. It is another website entirely. Anyway, our url is definitely www.catsailor.com -- It probably doesn't work in that particular post because I made a mistake when I did the post originally, and I had inadvertently put catamaransailor.com, which is not ours. When I corrected it, apparently it looks corrected but was not. Thanks for letting me know.

In case you haven't noticed yet, Rick has posted story and pix. Go to our welcome page and click on the links in the teaser paragraph. If you don't know how to get to our welcome page, it is [urlxxx=http://www.catamaransailor.com.]www.catsailor.com.[/xxxurl] Or you can click on the Catamaran Sailor logo at upper left of this page.

At the time he posted the story, the race committee had not yet posted final results, so he did the best he could.

Mary, you only corrected 1/2 the problem; I added xxx above to show you.

I have the results and revised my story page. So, go to www.catsailor.com for the teaser and links, or click on the logo in upper left corner.

And I must say, for a Worlds why couldn't they find better marks. Heck, I have those big yellow West Marine Marks they could have used and seen.

As for the change of course, I really saw no wind shift that would have required a change, but nonetheless it seemed the RC did the right moves. And while the Change of Course SIs were a little iffy, the mark descriptions SI cleared that up -- Yellow was normal, any changed mark was orange.
Several of the leaders were pretty confused when just before they got to the weather mark the Mark Boat picked it up.
The Mark Boat could have been a little speedier in picking it up, but were perfectly legal according to the SIs.

"And I must say, for a Worlds why couldn't they find better marks."

Thanks Rick, I had no absolutely doubt about that, hence my comment about the "invisible flag."

While it is generally preferred, there is absolutely no "requirement" in the RRS to remove the original mark (I haven't seen the SIs for this event to see if that was modified). To the contrary, there are situations, such as at regattas with multiple flights (starts), when you must have both marks in the water.

May not be the case at this event, but when the weather mark is a totally different color than the change mark (often a different shape to boot), it drives me completely insane to hear people complain about not understanding what to do when the mark is moved. (If the marks are similar, that's another story.)

It's so simple it's ridiculous: if Charlie is up, go to the other mark.

Now, having said all of that, most of the sailors that I've seen complain aren't usually the ones in the top 10 at big events (I'm sure that's no coincidence). Normally, if a top 10 guy goofs, he blames himself and picks off the boats he lost.

Mike

EDIT: Hard to say without being there of course, but it may have been better in this case to leave the original mark in the water, record who rounded where, and prepare to deal with it ashore.

I'll put the update here, as well as in the other thread.

Tuesday, Race 1:
Last time around the weather mark, positions were as follows:
1. Ashby
2. Melvin (close behind)
3. Guck
4. Pease Glaser
5. Dubois
6. Struble
7. Andrew Gaynor, USA
8. Ogletree
9. Kinder
10. Andersson
11. Booth
12. Landenberger
13. Tony Arends, USA
14. Philpott
15. Daniel
16. Fred Eaton, Canada
17. Cogan
18. Drummond

Wind is 7-8 knots out of the north. Light chop. Only occasional trapezing for some of the lighter guys. As the leaders were on the last leg to leeward to the finish line, they had lapped many others farther back in the fleet, so it will be a while before the next race gets started.

At completion of the first race today, Rick has figured accumulated scores for the first three races of the regatta. This is not official from the RC, and he figured them for the top nine boats.

Positions after three races:
1. Glenn Ashby, 5 points
2. Lars Guck, 6
3. Pete Melvin, 14
4. Mitch Booth, 21
5. Murray Philpott, 23
5. Luc Dubois, 23
7. Matt Struble, 28
8. Charlie Ogletree, 31
9. Chad Atkins, 34

From Mary's post on the other thread:

"Re: Redress in the second race for Scotty Anderson and Murray Philpott:
Apparently, the RC was a little slow in getting the Charlie flag up at the C mark to indicate a change of A mark. The flag went up after Scotty and Murray had rounded C, so they were not aware of the mark change and were given redress."

That's... not... good...

And you know who's on the jury . . . PU.

Okay, second race on Tuesday.
Positions the first time around the weather mark:

1. Guck
2. Scotty Anderson
3. Ashby
4. Booth
5. Dubois
6. Ogletree
7. Cam Lewis, USA
8. Mark Bellerman, USA
9. Struble
11. Beike

Following that group, a batch of 25 or 30 boats went around the mark -- too many to get numbers on.

RC is reporting wind of 7 1/2 knots, still out of the north.

Finish positions for Race 2 on Tuesday:

1. Guck
2. Ashby
3. Scotty Anderson
4. Struble
5. Melvin
6. Booth (but he was OCS)
7. Ogletree
8. Dubois
9. Landenberger

Rick's rough standings for the four races so far:

1. Lars Guck, 7 points
1. Glenn Ashby, 7 points
3. Pete Melvin, 19 points
4. Luc Dubois
5. Matt Struble
6. Charlie Ogletree

NOTE: Mitch Booth would have been in 4th, but his OCS messed that up, and also makes it hard to figure the points of the boats following him.

That's it for today's racing. Watch for Rick's report later today, and, hopefully, official results.

OOOOOHHHH, that's not good! We had a little mishap like that at the H16/20 Nats this summer with the same RC. The mark boat didn't quite get the job done properly. Let me tell you, there was butt chewin! Remember the mark boat guys are volunteers and do their best. Sometimes it just doesn't work out <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

Not the same RC - PU's on the Jury this time, not the RC.

Guaranteed that Billy Richnow (the PRO) is getting some phone calls from the course with some "suggestions" from the jury. PU's not going to cut him any slack at this event (nor should he at a worlds).

That's one of the many (and there are MANY) challenges of being a good PRO. Knowing "when to hold em, and when to fold em." There's obviously a time and a place for the "butt chewing," and I've never seen anyone as good at figuring that out as PU, Means and a Laser guy up this way (Tom Duggan). Doesn't surprise me that they're all ISAF and Olympic-caliber. We're lucky to have at least one other guy locally (Ron Hopkins, Optis) who is also a great mentor.

I totally agree! I've worked quite a few race courses with these guys and can't believe how much you can learn in a week on the water! I like hearing their stories from 'back in the day'.

You're right MB, not the same RC.
