Posts: 393 Camden NSW | Does any one know how the heavy weight boats go compared to other classes or even a light weight mossie. Thinking would it better for the heavyweight boats to have a seperate yardstick to the light weight as the heavy weight boats are carrying more weight and the the same sail area as a light weight mossie. Had a look at a sloop mossie which looks to me as if it might be a heavy weight but if we are club racing on the same YS as a light weight mossie I will be left behind. My question is how hard would it be to have a seperate YS for the heavy weight boat?

Posts: 142 3 weeks Newman WA 1 week Robe ... | hi william, my boat last year that i sailed at the nationals weighed in at 85 kg. it wasnt that bad, a new sail would have made more of a difference than dropping 15 kg out of it. to answer your question, i my opinion, i think a seperate yardstick for heavier boats wont work. that is what handicaps are for, not yardstick

I sail a heavy weight Mozzie and in strong conditions I think that I'm up there with the best. Others may think otherwise.
The big difference occurs in the light winds where the extra mass tends to slow me down and the leeward just tends to dig into the water rather than riding over the top like the newer Mozzies. Then again maybe I'm just crap in light conditions.
You probably have to take into account the old Mozzie construction meeting the measurement regulations versus the new Mozzies that can get the most buoyancy from their hulls by going to the maximum limits of measurement tolerances.
The biggest difference I've seen in performance with the old Mozzie is the addition of a new rig and sail. The problem is then learning how to get the most out of the power plant relative to the old sack that I called my sail.
Regards,
Peter
