Does any one know how the heavy weight boats go compared to other classes or even a light weight mossie.
Thinking would it better for the heavyweight boats to have a seperate yardstick to the light weight as the heavy weight boats are carrying more weight and the the same sail area as a light weight mossie.
Had a look at a sloop mossie which looks to me as if it might be a heavy weight but if we are club racing on the same YS as a light weight mossie I will be left behind.
My question is how hard would it be to have a seperate YS for the heavy weight boat?

William

hi william, my boat last year that i sailed at the nationals weighed in at 85 kg. it wasnt that bad, a new sail would have made more of a difference than dropping 15 kg out of it. to answer your question, i my opinion, i think a seperate yardstick for heavier boats wont work. that is what handicaps are for, not yardstick

Will,

A yardstick is set as an average of all the mossies competing...in our case as with all the classes the Vics look after them and nationally we all use the VYC (Yachting Victoria)yardstick

If it is club racing...surely your club has a club handicap system that uses the yardstick as a starting point and then adjusts a correction factor based on the boat's performance

Lets NOT get carried away into splitting handicaps...really a light boat (55kg)with a 100kg skipper and a heavy boat (65kg) and an 75 kg skipper....well you do the maths as to all up weight.

there is my two bob's worth.

Will,

I sail a heavy weight Mozzie and in strong conditions I think that I'm up there with the best. Others may think otherwise.

The big difference occurs in the light winds where the extra mass tends to slow me down and the leeward just tends to dig into the water rather than riding over the top like the newer Mozzies. Then again maybe I'm just crap in light conditions.

You probably have to take into account the old Mozzie construction meeting the measurement regulations versus the new Mozzies that can get the most buoyancy from their hulls by going to the maximum limits of measurement tolerances.

The biggest difference I've seen in performance with the old Mozzie is the addition of a new rig and sail. The problem is then learning how to get the most out of the power plant relative to the old sack that I called my sail.

Regards,

Peter

The old boat I destroyed had a very V-ed bottom which is unlike the newer boats. This probably has more impact on speed than it being overweight.

I am one that disagrees.
If you put 2 sailors of equal skill on two identical boats except for wieght.
The guy on the lighter boat will win more.

Brian, I agree that in your case a new sail would have made a bigger difference than a lighter boat. But that is because your sail was pretty bad.

Chris,
If everything was exactly the same...but honestly the chance of every other parameter being the same, including skill is remote, after all I have seen good sailors win in old gear and of course, vice versa..

At the end of the day, the guy who wants to play in the top paddock will have the best gear, but without others to play with.....well not much fun.
