Yeah, that must be it.

I'm sure all those 3 lap races had nothing to do with it...

Wouter, do you know about how much time an Inter 20 or F18 owes a F16 on a 30 minute race? I haven't seen the finishing times from Wildcat yet, so I don't know how I was doing compared to them.

Let's see .... in a 30 minute race, the:

I20 owes you 2:59
F18 owes you 0:46

CT = ET * 100 / PN

CT = Corrected Time
ET = Elapsed Time
PN = Portsmouth #

PN (F16) = 63.0
PN (F18) = 62.4
PN (I20) = 59.3

I remember the F16 USPN to being alot higher till recently, from memory 65.2 as D-PN. Upon checking I discovered that US-sailing has back-dated this adjustment to march 2008.

The ratio of (2-up) F16 to F18 US D-PN is now the same as the Texel, SCHRS and Aussie VYC ratios !

Therefor the same the world over for the very first time !

That is a very good development.

These changes are :

Old
65.2 69.3 67.5 64.4 62.3

New
63.0 66.0 64.5 61.9 60.1

Change
-3.4% -4.8% -4.5% -3.9% -3.6%

I think we can thank the F16 sailors up the Chesapeake for finally achieving the impossible; having USPN converge to a realistic rating. Of course, the hammer called Team McDonald had weakened the defenses sufficiently over the years.

The F18 and F16 are very much alike, but when you want to make them go fast they are very different boats, that require very different settings.

Care to elaborate? Are you referring to F16 uni vs. F18 sloop?

The ones I know of:
Crew position on the wire. Upwind you want your crew on the mainbeam and skipper just forward of the daggerboards. You really need the sterns out of the water and dig the bows a bit. On the f16 you are bound to pitchpole upwind if you do this.
Mast rotation on the F18 you really want to have the mast more centered than on a F16. The F18 mast is much stiffer compared to the F16s; so its harder for the top to fall off in a blow.
Downwind you really want the crew or skipper out on the water to get that extra leverage. On the F16 you can get away with sailing a deeper/shorter course. You really want to heat up the F18 in order to get good speed and having the crew or skipper on the wire will give you that extra RM.

wow. should have guessed the 16 was more sensitive. Would have thought the inverted bow on the 16 would have the skipper more forward...

check this:
we were probably a little too far back but this is pretty much at the back of the boat- and like robi said... the boat can and will ppole upwind and definately on a reach if you try to stay forward. If we were any further forward on that day we would dig in the bows and slow way down. It was pretty windy that day and we almost did pitchpole a couple times just powering up after gybing- even without the spin.

It's good to see your crew trimming the main. I would hate to think that you would over exert yourself too much whilst helming

Like the sloop mode there. And yes, there isn't much more "back" you can get on that photo!

I presume your settings for sloop configuration include raking the mast back more (than for the uni setting)? Does that help keep the bows up a bit?

And would there have been any benefit to pulling the boards up maybe 1/3 in that breeze to keep from tripping over them?

Do you think the Florida results just ended up in the bin?

I encourage ALL US regatta organizers to submit their open class buoy race results. Clearly changes do get made when the data supports it.

For the record Open Class racing still sucks, it just sucks a little bit less. Sorry Mark S. I just can't stop myself.

The Alter Cup is NOT about open class racing. It is about being the purest one design (SMOD) multihull championship the US has to offer IMO.

If someone can come up with a better way to select the area qualifier other than a open class regatta I'm all ears. Until then it's what we have to do to get to the show.

If open racing "sucks", how can it be a legitimate selector for ". . .the purest one design (SMOD) multihull championship the US. . ."?

It seems to me that if the selection process was held in a little higher esteem, more people would be inclined to participate. Who wants to go to a lot of trouble, spend lots of time and money to participate in something that "sucks".

I've attended two Area D South regattas and both were top notch events! Imo, that's how we should promote them.

Pete, we are on the same page but disconnected.

I see where you are coming from as I'm sure many share your opinion. But, I'm not going say I like a specific aspect of a championship selection process when I don't. I also recognize that's it's the best solution available and I can accept that, that doesn't mean I have to like it.

To imply that I don't promote our area qualifier, that's a bit unfair don't you think?

Besides the 'sucks' comment was a bit of a joke and I thought the apology to Mark S. would have made that clear. No I don't like open class sailing but it doesn't keep me up at night either and yes, I've been known to race open from time to time.

Go to your area qualifier have a good time, and if you're so inclined kick me in the nuts in person, it really is more fun that way.

Dude, I wish you could sail open right now too. Then you would be too tired to give me S#$T will while I'm trying decode the raw scoring data with my secret decoder ring.

It was good to see you again, and you're still a punk.

Oh! I second Pete's nomination as Area D South Rep.

Right.... a kick in the nuts..... that's the ticket for Dave!

Why?... Just the principal of the matter.... Makes me smile!

Re Open Class on the Chesapeake...

Well, the Open Class has collapsed... What we have now are OD classes of Hobie 16, 17, 18 A class and Nacra 20's.

At the last "open class event" we had one boat.... a lonely F16... racing 8 20's and 10 A cats...

The price to race a high performance catamaran on the weekend up here is pretty high... This is not so good for growing the sport. Entry level sailors will hopefully join the Div 11 circuit... or swallow hard and get an A cat.

What we will do is continue to organize open class at some YC events where if we get 3 H16's, 3 TheMightyHobie18's, 3 H17s, 3 Acats and 3 F16's... we have a good race... (the 20's don't move).

mark
