You still haven't convinced me and to run a short courses so it favors uni spin sailors is not a legitimate reason to run short courses.

...Unless you are a Uni spin sailor!

And my only point is, with shorter courses you can get more races done per day. I'm for more short races vs. fewer long races.

I believe what Timbo is trying to convey is that he is old and out of shape. Shorter courses do not favor the uni salor, just make it more possible to compete. (there is a lot of f'n lines on that thing)

Very fun weekend and I was very glad to have 2 days of good wind. Kind of brought back those memories of mid-west lake sailing with all the puffs and changes in direction though. It really made you sail your own race even if someone else happened to be very near you, chances are they were not in the same wind. I also releized that dream of going on the pro poker tourney will have to wait a few more years, at least as long as I might have to face mama again.

Yo Timbo - watch all the flags on the boat next time. Paricularly the blue one.

They don't

Single handers take longer to hoist and drop the kite. This is where you gain most.

Big courses (and so less hoists and drops) favour single handers, as long as the single handers are fit enough.

Yes I understood the set and snuff issue when Tim made the point.

Boat handling is a big part of buoy racing. Special consideration will not be given for the type of boat uni or sloop when setting up a course. The F16 class pushed to sail straight up uni and sloop and almost always push to be on the same line and course with everyone else at least in my neck of the woods.

The party is over Tim, time to sail now. Or maybe it's time for an A cat.

for those of us who want to learn something-
like phaedrus asked-
what denotes a closed start/finish line? Something about a blue flag on the committee boat?
can't find the flag in the standard racing rules thingamajig.

The Blue flag means nothing more than the Committee boat being on station at the finishing area. Unless specifically mentioned in the SI's it has nothing to do with the finish or finish line. The Finish is the number of laps required to complete the course and the finish line should be accurately described in the SI's (Masts on boats or buoys etc).
I still disagree with Scooby, the shorter the courses the more the advantage for singlehanders. We are quicker out of the blocks, quicker to tack, quicker to gybe. We are slower on the hoists and drops but usually overall quicker downwind. The longer the course gives the two up teams time to really get into the groove with their extra crew wieght/power advantage.

And don't forget the fatigue factor, the more laps will favor two up vs. uni spin as the uni skipper is going to get -more tired- doing the sets/take downs, than a crewed boat. When the wind is blowing, all the more-so.

Look, I love racing uni vs. the two up boats, and agaisnt the F18's and I-20's as well. I don't expect to beat them, and I'm happy to be near them. In a perfect world we would have at least 10 of each, on their own starts, mano-a-mano one design racing at it's finest. But this world is never going to be perfect, so we do the best we can. My point is more shorter races vs. fewer longer races. I like the starts, playing the shifts, hauling butt under spinnaker, and a good, close finish. So more starts, and shorter races keep the fleet closer together.

In my observations, all the 3rd lap does is spread out the fleet more. Has anyone ever gone from last to fist on the 3rd lap?

And, on the A cat thing? Nah, I like the spinnaker, but it may be time to get an F18 and good crew, then bitch about the F16's rating...

No, you can't usually go from last to first on the third lap but, it can and does happen in light air events. Even in moderate conditions you can pass on the third lap. In fact I believe someone passed you during the second race on the third lap at the WildCat.

As far as b!itching about ratings, look in your own house for that my friend! It took something like 2 seconds for some of the F16 sailors to start b!tching about the F17 rating!

You mean they passed me because I was old, out of shape and tired by that third lap, right? So why were they behind me in the first two laps? I'll take your word for it because Gina and Tammy's bartending skills wiped my memory clean during the poker game. I still don't know who drove to the hotel.

I don't know who was bitching about the F17 rating or why, I don't see too many of them down here so I've got no beef with them. Seems we should be about even but I haven't done the math.

Like I said, in a perfect world we would have at least 10 of each and not have to do math to determine a winner, but it is what it is.

Lots of people like to bitch about ratings rather than get out and practice. It's blowing 20 today, after my 20 mile bike ride (to get in shape), I'm going out to practice, again.

Why not drop Portsmouth all together and go to something like Texel!?

Ding, you're the local rep. Why not bring it up at the AGM. (I won't be able to make it.)

Terry when while owning the F18 have I bitched about the F16 rating? I would love you to quote me. I purchased the F18 back in July.

I did complain about it when I sailed the F16, remember we used to talk alot about it. I dont those conversations were bitching. Plus you all can thank Matt and Gina for the reduction in rating, cause none of you sail as fast as they do. I say none of you, because I no longer sail the F16, I am sure than whenever I get a chance to share the course with them they will span my butt as well.
Sux to be a F16 now. Specially all those who loved to take advantage of the one up-two up rating with different wind conditions, specially those who loved the rating.
63-for a F16 is pretty darn fast and the only folks who sail the boat that fast is team McDonald.

Your words. But you know what, F16 sailors are no more controlled by the "hive mind" than F18, Tornado, H16, A cat or whatever class. You pointing at the class in general is equally bad form as what whoever might have posted elsewhere. Point at an individual and tell him to wise up if he stepped over a line, but please dont go smearing a whole class.

You referred to "your own house", and I called you on that. I am tired of people trying to smear our whole class on the actions of a few individuals.

With your agressive style, you should be able to handle as mild a feedback as that. TTFU man.

What is up with the name calling? That is first graders playground stuff. TTFU!
