Posts: 168 San Diego | Mast is straight up, no rake. So how close to daggered boats should I be pointing? Not counting the "S" turns.
Definitely try raking the mast back about 10-15degrees, if it is straight now maybe go up two holes in the forestay adjuster. The rake shouldn't be as severe as you might see on a H16. Make sure you tighten the shrouds after you do this. You should gain a few degrees pointing, but don't go overboard with the rake or your speed will suffer downwind. | | | Re: Nacra 5.7 Pointing ability

You really should be comparing your cat performance to other 5.7's if you can find them.
It is good (or great) to learn about your boat, sails, fine tuning and all.. but its not really relevant to compare how a 25 year old design works against a newer boat (IMHO). | | | Re: Nacra 5.7 Pointing ability

Posts: 1,037 Central California | Make sure your weight is forward, the Leeward bow needs to be be more than 1/2 way submerged. ...Bows DOWN. I just switched to a Nacra 5.0 and sure enough, it works GREAT on this boat, too. Light air or heavy, its the secret sauce! Ditto--with my 5.0 it pointed well with 2-3" of bow visible above water.

Posts: 217 | AZcat - I agree in general with the comments about keeping the bow in as key to better pointing. You should not be pointing 15 deg lower than board boats. May 2-5deg, that is what I see on my 5.7 compared to board boats. However, I'd caution the users posting who have experience on 5.0 but who have not sailed a 5.7. While in general the concept is the same, in fact the extra waterline length of the 5.7 compared to the 5.0 makes for a problem. When you push the 5.7 bow down, this extra length means the rudders are farther out of the water, and prone to cavitate/ventilate /stall out more quickly. This is the balance /walking the line I experience when racing the 5.7 - moving forward just to the point before the rudders are going to stall out. When I sailed my 5.0, I never had that experience, I could bury the bow and still have enough rudder blade in the water.
Anoher thing to consider is the jib sheeting location of the 5.7, on the hull. I'm actually considering moving it inboard, locating it like on a NACRA 5.2.

Posts: 337 Arizona | Thanks to all who posted on this subject. It looks like I have some homework to do. I will work on all of the above. I think that it may be a great oppurtunity to upgrade to a mylar squaretop main also. I think that I may have major slot issues. I will get some pics while upwind and post them. In fact, I think there may be some on "My Space- Wet Kitty Catamaran club." Google Wet Kitty,... it's the one with the boat.
