I find it funny that up here in the cold northeast we have more women and yutes on boats/multis than any other part of the Country I've sailed in.
You should have seen the looks one some of the peoples faces a few years back when racing the I20 when I would tell people that it was my wife's boat and she was just letting me borrow it.
One more

Chicks can't drive big boats

"Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda "Excuses are the tools of the weak and incompetent" - Two sista's I overheard in the hall "You don't have to be a brain surgeon to be a complete idiot, but it helps"
Right, The 16 is very weight conscious and has to have either two small people, or if one of the team is fairly big, the other member must be small and light. Thus women and kids are in demand in that class. This is true of all small boats that are two-up, I believe.
My favorite is Leah White, just won the Hobie Wave Open Nationals. Yes, she is my daughter-in-law and very proud of her.., and she is pretty and pretty new to sailing.
There are a great number of reasons that the H16 attracts and maintains women (and youts)...
The most obvious is that it is a simple rig. Not easy to win (very competitive, "serious" fleet), but unless it's blowing 20, it's pretty comfortable and there isn't a ton of stuff to pull, get caught up in, hurt by, etc. Very easy to learn and simple layout helps attract new crews.
BTW, the above paragraph is not my perspective, but that of my wife, who I met because she was looking to get onto a simpler cat...
[EDIT: Thank god this isn't SA, "get onto a simpler cat"...]
Tom, 204 is almost in a separate league! I think your only rivals, are with Caleb in the northwest as far as family participation. Keep them women and yutes sailing! My hat is off to you. Tammy, I really only know Jay from your posts, and I've always thought "I like that guy."
My wife once told me she thought of herself as a sailor until she met me...
Seems the type of things we enjoy in sailing are totally different! She enjoys socializing, sailing with more than two on board. "Bar hopping" by boat. Casual and relaxing (lazy) sailing. Not too challenging conditions. Busy canals and small lakes. Hot weather (no trades here! So you know what that means...)
I like trapezing for miles at a time. Seeing no-one else for hours on end. Staring at tell-tales and waves like the meaning of life, the universe and everything will be eventually revealed by them. Being suddenly brought back to reality by the pale-faced crew screaming at me from the windward hull to "do something"! Oh yeah; big waves and Air time ;-) and more generally; Any sailing location the authorities publish warnings for. Needless to say, she HATES these things (sniff, sniff).
