By golly you're right! But I do use a knot, appropriately placed, to prevent the traveler from coming untraveled.

Come to think of it, I use a single line, and make a series of stripes with rigging tape on the traveler end (about 6-8 inches apart).

There is only one reason for having them connected.
When you are out on the wire you can still operate the traveler by using the other end of the lines.

Screw it all, just have your crew hold the boom directly with his/her hands and dispense with the mainsheet AND traveler.

And just give them the clew of the spin to hold with their other hand.

That should clean up the trampoline quite a bit...
