I've used a few vacuum pumps over the years and found that those that use oil as a lube do put out a fine mist that could be misconstrued as smoke. I put the pump output into a 5 gal. pail with some rags in it. That captures the oil mist and stops it from getting on your next bonding project.

I've piped the exhaust from my pump through a hole in the wall towards the neighbours'. God know what comes out of it! Perhaps I should look?

I get a good flow of air through the shed so I lit a stogie, cracked a beer, and let the oil drip into an ole' cuban coffee can.
