I have retrofitted my 2005 Tiger with the new rudders and dual gudgeons. I opted to do this since I could no longer get the identical rudders supplied with this boat. This has not been as easy as I hoped. Removing the old gudgeons is not easy and took off some gelcoat that I had to repair. I had to drill and tap 4 new holes per side and the transom support plate did not extend far enough down to catch the lower holes. So I had to put in another piece of aluminum so I could tap and spread the load. It was a good deal of work and I hope the performance is worth it.
I have three questions:
1)I can just get my index finger between the lower transom and the front edge of the rudder. I put about 5/16” of rubber layers in the casting. Can you tell me if there is a recommended reference and what is the recommended starting point for rudder rake. My mast rake is near the rear port hole.
2)When I installed the rudders, I noticed the rudder arm was ¾” closer to the hull. I verified the gudgeon is at the same height as the old one. Perhaps the rudder arm is at a different angle with the new rudder. And of course the rudder arm seems shorter since the gudgeon moved the rudder aft. The rudder arm hits my foot strap badly and likely would interfere with a foot or strap all along the rear hull. Have you heard of this issue with retrofits or do the newer boats have this issue? Any info would be valuable.
3)These rudders have a lot more swing to them. What do you do to prevent over rotation when backing up? It looks like some kind of cable fitting is installed in the manual, but it’s not clear where it would attach on the rudder. Again, any info would be valuable.
