IS REAL!

The final redlines have been submitted to the Organizing Authority for the 2010 NAF18 Championship and the measurement certification requirement is part of the NOR. If you plan on competing in 2010 NAF18 Championship and you are presented with the opportunity to get your boat measured you should take it. We can only process a few boats at the event and those teams will be required to make an appointment prior to showing up. Please do not to show up to the championship without a measurement certificate you may find yourself in a very unpleasant situation.

Please DO NOT use the lack of scales as an excuse to not get your boat measured. The bulk of the time spent on measuring boats is consumed by measuring sails and the platform which does not require the use of the scales. The scales are used for rudder, dagger board, platform and ready to sail weights and that takes about 10 - 15 minutes when well organized.

Measuring a boat is NOT rocket science it just takes a little time. I encourage you to set up a measurement party or two with your fellow competitors and get the bulk of the measurement certificate completed.

You are not allowed to measure your own boat, if you do start measuring boats please add your name to the list of measures on the NAF18 site. There is no special certification requirement for class measures at this time, so… just do it!

Special note to the Southern CA, Pac Northwest, FL/GA and Midwest teams, you have some very willing and able measures in your respective areas so any excuse not to get your boat measured will be a very tough sell.

ALL boats are required to have a measurement cert at nationals and that includes our Canadian friends.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me directly my email is in my profile and I’m extremely responsive.

You have eight months to get it done!

Regards,

David Ingram

BUMP!!! Please get your your measurement certificate prior to the Nationals. CRAW and The Racine Yacht Club (the Hosts) want sailors to enjoy the week that we have planned and do not want you to miss out on a great regetta. As Dave says you have 8 months to get this done so do not procrastinate NOR for the regatta will be released soon.

Regarding measurement:
This may sound like a silly question but how is the over all length measured?
More specifically how is the hull leveled on it’s waterline?
How is the waterline determined? Do you just go square to the dagger board?
Also if the total length is measured to the outside of the rudder pintles why don’t people extend the transoms that extra half inch under the pintles or recess the pintles into the stern?

Does this question not make any sense? I though someone would know the answer. Who is out there measuring boats?

On the West Coast we are planning on measuring boats this year. No one has really complained. Most of the other competitive sailing fleets require it and they are really good about it in Europe. The cost for a full measurement in the US is $175. That is not too much, and the measurement will go with the boat to the new owner. It is required to be able to sail the North Americans in Racine. Best thing is to get it out of the way before you are in dire need just before the event. I heard there would be some limited number of boats able to be measured at the event but it will not be too many as it does take some time.

I spoke with Dave at Tradewinds about getting the fleet measured here in the North East. The hope is to get the scales here and bang out a whole bunch of boats over two weekends this summer. It can only be a good thing for the class in the long run, but transitions are always tough. Having 8 months notice before NA's is a very good thing, but we should all recognize how busy life gets and plan well in advance for having your boat measured!
I may regret this at some point, but offered to help coordinate and take the reigns on getting the measurement process going for our area.
Chris

I talked to Chris Tuckfield from the midwest and John Tomko from Texas at Tradewinds and they indicated they are ready to get the process going in their areas. Thank you all for the support you have shown regarding this objective. Like Chris said we have eight months but there are a lot of distractions out there so please keep it on the front burner and keep knocking out boats.

Dave

This is the best and most participation we have seen at actually getting the measurements done! Thanks goes to all for reporting both your concerns and support. Looks like all or most of the boats going to NAs will be certified.

That is great news. As a CRAW member helping to organize this regatta I just want to thank the class for getting this done so we have no hassles at registration and weigh in. 201 days and counting down until the Catamaran Championship starts. Make your plans to come to Racine WI. The NOR is coming soon
