Hi all,

The major event for the coming season is the 41st running of the Mosquito National Titles at Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club, Paynesville, from Saturday 29th December 2012 to Thursday 3rd January2013.

This will be the second time that GLYC has hosted the National Titles for Mosquito’s in my 23 years in Paynesville, the first was back in 1999-2000. I was in my second? season on sloop rigged plywood Mossie number 1111 “Perfect Score” with son Ben crewing (turned out to be the heaviest, heavy weight boat in the fleet), Tim S was in his first full season on the high tech? (fibreglass-foam sandwich)“Whiteside Express”, Neil J had just bought the oldest ply Mossie in the fleet to sail cat rigged in the National Titles and of course Peter N was visiting from Loch Sport on the radical? air craft ply, cat rigged Mossie “Red Alert”. None of the local boats where new, all where far from it, but we all learnt a lot, enjoyed the Nationals and camaraderie of the class and have continued to sail Mossies.

My point is I guess, if anybody else is thinking of taking advantage of the opportunity to buy a Mossie or sail in the Nationals for their first time at Paynesville, just remember you don’t have to have the latest and greatest to get out there, enjoy yourself and learn heaps while you are at it. You never know, you may even win something, between outright, mk1 & mk2, heavyweight, handicap, first ply boat, masters, youth, best female and more, nearly everyone comes away a winner. One thing I can assure you of is if you do attend, you will get plenty of help from the current Mossie sailors to help you get the most out of it and really that is one of the most enjoyable parts of sailing, learning how to get the most out of what ever boat you sail. The current GLYC Mossie Fleet despite the impression of high performance from high placed championship results, still has many far from new boats in it. In fact the re birthed “Thrice Bitten” started life well before the 1999-2000 Nationals and raced at Paynesville as a Sloop Rig under the name of “Pitch Fork”. “Catalyst” was also at those nats, known as “Moggie Power” (can’t understand why Mitch changed the name) and raced Sloop rigged and “Karma Cat” formerly known as “Karma Chris” was the boat to beat at the 1999-2000 Nats and couldn’t be, winning the sloop rigged title and a few before that.

So come on, get a hold of a Mossie of any age and join in the Nationals, I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Well said Gary, and lets not forget the club now has a beachfront bar wink You can't pass that up! And if you're a ginger performance is guaranteed laugh

Mosquito 1750 Bonnie-GLYC / Peninsula

The plan was simple.... Like my brother in law Phil, except this plan just might work!

Yeah the new bar will be well and truly open by then and will include a wet bar window on to the verandah grin. Also BBQ on the verandah, who's up for a sausage and beer as we come of the water after each race. Just need some volunteers to cook the snags whistle.

Have a few other special plans in the pipeline, will keep you posted, when they are confirmed wink.

Have a look at some of the other threads and the website, plenty of places to stay. We'll find somewhere for you, don't let accomodation stop anybody from coming, there are enough local sailors to look after anybody that can't find commercial accomodation.

Hi Duck,

are you from around Paynesville? What sort of mossie are you looking for?

I am chasing up a Mossie for another Paynesville sailor, so if it is for sale and he doesn't buy it, can pass on info.

May also be other Mossie's for sale locally (have to talk to owners), so get in touch.

Gary/Tim,

I'm coming down for the Taipan Nationals, but thought this was a good place to ask.

where do you usually race? I'm assuming basically between Bluff Head and Point Wilson, is this correct?

Hey, where are you sailing confused don't know of that area on the gippsland lakes.

The area that GLYC sail in is Lake Victoria between Raymond Island, Newlands Arm, Sperm Whale Head and Rottamah Island.

Thats the area I'm describing, I just used a dodgy map and less well known landmarks to describe it. Haven't sailed through that area in daylight for years.

Should I have a new Thread?
Am I correct in observing the only toll road I will travel on between West Gate Bridge and Sale is the tunnel under the Botanic Gardens onto the Monash Freeway, the Southern Link (City Link)?
Western Freeway A8 onto the West Gate Freeway/Princess HWY M1, over the WG bridge, (if its still there), through the Burnley Tunnel (tolled?) out onto the Monash Freeway M1 (same toll?) and eventually out of 'Eddieville'.
Toll is prepaid @$14.25, (Week End pass with City Link), passing through on Fridays/Saturdays so weekend toll required?
Will be in the Domain Tunnel on return trip? Same Monash Freeway, just one way in seperate tunnels.
No tolls in Adelaide, only one-way expressways, and that's currently closed.

I have a unpowered site at the Eagle Point CP with only one small tent on it, only mwa in it. See park map on the mossie website, site SR UP12. Is there anyone who wants to pitch a tent along side and share site cost? $11/night for one person as its $22/night for two. If extras then we can divide the overall extra cost. Sites are getting rare!

Hi Phillip,

no problem with needing another thread, any questions about Nats are ok here.

Yes only toll road you should need to use is citylink, through the tunnels and extensions. Unless you want to visit Raymond Island while you are here. grin

Not sure about day & weekend passes, I haven't used them for years (have had a Etag for years now as use to travel on citylink regularly).

You can buy your Citylink 24hr pass up to 3 days AFTER you make the trip. That's better than pre-paying as plans can sometimes change and they will not refund you if you've already paid.

The alternative is to tell your GPS to avoid toll roads. You'll either head down Kings Way, along StKilda Rd and rejoin the freeway at Toorak Rd, or the other way is along the Eastern Freeway and down Springvale Rd.
It's tedious, will take an extra 30-40 minutes (guess!) but will save you $14.25.

Don't forget to enter the Nationals (and the Spinnaker Nationals if you're that way inclined!). The price goes up after Dec 1st (although you do have the rest of this weekend to fill out the online form). Save yourself $15 !

Entry form

There's a list of entries up on the website here:

Hi all,

19 sleeps to the Nats, time to get your $#!+ together and hurry up and get those entries in. You don't want to miss this Nats, you won't believe the New Years Eve Fireworks we have organised just for the Mossies wink and a few other surprises.

If you want to know what they are you will have to turn up to find out. laugh

Anyone coming to the Nationals that hasn't entered yet, please go to the online entry form and put your entry in soon, otherwise you will only end up doing the same thing at registration (or standing in a queue). You may as well get it done now!

Hi all,

just an idea if it suits, you might like to bring a bike with you. Paynesville is a fairly flat area and even for those staying at Eagle Point there is a walking/bike track (part gravel) to Paynesville, if you enjoy exercise (would be about 5-8km) sick . Can arrange storage in boat sheds of gear so don't need to carry it with you. grin

Some special plans are starting to come together, hope to be able to announce in the next couple of days. wink

Nice idea about the bike Gary though I'm not sure I fancy riding home to Tim's after the "generous support" I will likely be giving to your club's bar after a hard days sailing laugh

Don't worry all is looking good has been no change in status for a few weeks. Algae is allways present in the water, its part of the natural food chain (it's what the prawns eat crazy) and is currently low levels in all sailing areas.

Options have been looked at just in case and the other locations if needed will be satisfactory for rigging etc. smile

Hi all,

at last I can tell all about the secret plans I have been working on. cool

(Drum roll) The club will have a 25 seat Bus available (thanks to East Gippsland Specialist School and club member that is a licenced bus driver) to transport sailors from Eagle Point to Paynesville and possibly other points on route, use will be flexible according to demand, current ideas are.

Transport sailors to yacht club before sailing, after sailing, to and from functions at club and yes Simon it will run after the Bar closes grin . It will only cost a gold coin to travel on, with any money left after costs being donated to the school.

Also a Sightseeing, Orchard, Winery and Brewery tour for the Lay Day all within 50km of Paynesville, open to other suggestions, what do you think. tired

Hi,

Leave Brisbane Monday, via Armidale, Sydney, Canberra, Orbost and arrive Paynesville for spinnaker races after 3 and a bit days on the road for 1,700km or so.

Great idea with the bus,I have two non sailors coming whose legs will get tired riding their bikes everywhere.

Brett - results are often up on this forum by someone doing a daily blog, there may be plans to post on mossie website but Tim would answer that.
Full results up on National website after the regatta.

See you back here in Qld after, all going well we will have 3 mossies on the water up here with you, Damo and myself.

Look forward to having some other boats to sail against.

You can watch them as they are entered on the SailRes website SailRes, look for Victorian Mosquito Catamaran Association in the list of clubs.

Thanks, Damo.
Wil be careful on the road, used to long distance travel, need to get the travellers and a boat there in one piece and back home.

Leave Monday morning, my counter has gone off already, I'm on my way...

Merry xmas to all.

Hi all,

A warm sunny day with light easterly winds greeted the Mosquito Spinnaker sailors as they arrived from Queensland, South Australia and other parts of Victoria, for the Inaugural Mosquito Spinnaker National Titles on Thursday 27th December 2012.

Twelve boats greeted the starter in a building Easterly wind, with a choppy sea. Five races where held in quick succession, with wind gradually building to 15 knots in race 1 and 2 and then backing of to 12 knots in race 3 and then building again in race 4 & 5 to 20 knots, combined with the choppy sea state it was enough for a number of sailors to come to grief, including yours truly. Mitch described my capsize soon after starting the down wind in race 5 as looking like I had picked up a anchor on the end of my spinnaker pole. The end of the pole stuck in the water and stopped and the rest of the boat and I just kept going. Resulting in the most violent capsize that I can remember, I remember hitting the sidestay the bridle and chute mouth and a lot of water, a rough end to what had been a good day. Thankfully damage was limited to bent boat bits and bruising on me, so looking forward to getting back on the horse tomorrow.

Hope the wind dies down, south westerly front has just hit Paynesville, forecast to go over 20knots.

Hi all,

Before starting today's notes, must make mention of Nicks efforts yesterday in performing a perfect clean dismount from boat, whilst gybing and setting spinnaker perfectly so “Bite Me” proceeded to sail away without capsizing for hundreds of metres, quite a effort in the relatively strong winds.

Three races where held today to finish off the Mosquito Spinnaker National Titles, starting shortly after 11am and finishing about 1pm. Winds where true to forecast from the west, south west to south at 12 to 20 knots, with a small chop. Wind shifts caused some quick changes in places and after breaking their hound fitting the day before the “Splashes of Brilliance' crew got the opportunity to show what a sloop rig can do with spinnaker, winning a race and spending plenty of time at the pointy end of the fleet in the other races, some great racing was had sloop versus cat rig, hammering upwind and down, boat for boat as it should be. Again the wind caused a few capsizes, but thankfully never became too strong whilst racing was on, later in the afternoon it set in at about 30 knots. As more mossies arrived for the no spinnaker Nats.

Forecast is looking good for the start of racing again on Sunday, not too windy (we hope).

Four bottles of shiraz down and we haven't even made it to the invitation race yet!
This is ominous!

Can't understand why but everybody staying at Tims was late this morning sick.

Yet another big day (Sunday), pleasant invitation race this morning on flat water (except the power boat wash) in mostly trapezing conditions, on a long course. Everybody enjoyed checking each other out.

This afternoon, 2 back to back races in mostly 12 -15 knots on choppy water, very gusty and shifting 15 degrees regularly. First race start was keen, Bob and I cleared out after a while to fight to the finish, where with a lunge at the line I won by 4 seconds. Second race start was even keener, big battle for the pin, the youngsters went mad, with Mitch leading from Daniel and I think Nick and Matt around as well, I managed to work my way through them, mostly downwind to take the lead from Mitch only to lose it again upwind, then gain it again on the final run and hold it to a comfortable finish, with Mitch followed by Tim S, Daniel, Matt and Bob 6th.

Looking forward to tomorrow, 4 races planned, hope I make it to New Years Eve.

Hi all,

so much for the plan of posting every day whistle things just got to hectic, socialising grin and racing cool we came off the water at 5.30pm New Years Eve crazy

Well it's all over now 8 days (including 2 lay days) 20 races, what a huge week of sailing, thanks to the 60 odd volunteers from GLYC that made it a enjoyable regatta for all the Mossie sailors. 12 Mossies from 3 states contested the inaugural Australian Mosquito Spinnaker Championships and then 11 sloop rigged Mossies and 22 cat rigged Mossies contested the 41st Australian Mosquito Championships. The racing was intense, with both physical and mental exhaustion a factor, but was soon forgotten back at the club where the socialising was up to the usual Mossie standard, with the welcome BBQ, New Years Eve and Presentation Night a highlight. New Years Day a sightseeing, orchard, winery and brewery tour was held with the bus full of sailors and family enjoying a taste of what East Gippsland has to offer and the use of a local school bus made the social side of the Mossie champs that much more enjoyable for all, as they didn't need to worry about driving.

The Presentations where huge as usual with lots of prizes given out, not many sailors went home empty handed or with empty bellies sick . The Raymond Island Ramble a stern chaser race was a fun way to finish off the week, with 25 minutes between the first and last to start based on times from the weeks racing. As it turned out the gap was too big with the first to start the first to finish, but all the sailors enjoyed the challenge of trying to catch those in front and got to see more of the Gippsland Lakes System, sailing in Lake King as well as Lake Victoria.

Now its time to relax at last and for the local Mossie sailors to help run the son of Mossie Titles wink. The next big event will be the State Titles at Somers YC, hope to see you there.
