Hey guys,

I want to download a YouTube video for a presentation. Good presentation practice dictates that you never rely on an internet connection to be working when you need it (in the middle of your presentation), because that is precisely when it is most likely to fail (per Murphy)...

I know that there are lots of sites where you enter a URL, and they crunch the data and give you a link to download the video.

This needs to be "safe for work" so I can't risk extra stuff (ads or worse) being downloaded as part of the file.

Prefererably, I'd like to do the download on my Android and move it to the PC later.

Any recommendations?

Mike

I use browser plug-ins such as Video Download Pro on Chrome (URL)

and YouTube Video downloader for Firefox ( URL)

Yeah, it's just a matter of installing an extension on the browser.

I've used Youtube Video Downloader 1.3 for Chrome. Worked well enough for what I needed it for.

Thanks guys. Interesting that Chrome (Google) would download YouTube (Google), but YouTube itself won't let you save videos...

Well...technically speaking, the plugin for Chrome isn't a Google product.

Good point. I wonder if Google has any control over plugins?

They do but much like their app store (android), and in stark contrast to apple, they are rather unrestrictive until the app crosses into fraud.

The cat's already out of the bag. If you are really geeky (and motivated), there's ways to get at the video file data without the plug-in. The plug-in just makes it a lot easier. Shutting it down wouldn't really accomplish much.

I'd much rather get to it directly. I'm not looking to download tons of these, so speed isn't a priority.

I don't really trust the software packages, too many horror stories of what else might get added (adware, viruses, trackers, etc.).

Mike- Unless you're working on government security clearance stuff I don't think you have much too worry about here. I've used them for quite some time with no issues.

That being said, it seems that Google has changed their policies and no longer allows YouTube download plugins with Chrome. The Chrome solution above doesn't work any more. However, i just checked the Firefox plugin and it works perfectly.

Don't use anything Google if you're worried about being tracked. Those fuckers will sell every scrap of info they get on you. As I use a phone built by Google on a Google operating system running Google chrome....

I'm boatless.

Here is a GREAT way to save the entire video to your local storage.

Replace
www.youtube.com/whatevervideo### with
ssyoutube.com/whatevervideo###

Follow the instruction from the link below. It works perfectly for me. I grabbed all of the AC34 videos to watch at my leisure.

You can see the instructions at

Well, the tracking bothers me less than the other stuff, since I'm talking about presentations and reputation here (can't afford uncontrollable ads playing during the presentation).

Tracking would be a potential problem on a work computer.

Big Brother bothers me in terms of liberty and being an American, but that's for a whole different thread.

Just ignore that bicycle with the 3 meter antennae...

The Chrome extension I use still works (www.10youtube.com). I get six different sizes/formats available for download of the America's Cup Race 19.
