The race will cover approximately 1000 miles with overnight stops at multiple locations along the East Coast of the United States. Through a collaborative agreement between “Worrell 1000, Inc.” and “Sail Series Promotions USA, Inc.”, an organization has been formed to oversee the Research and Development, and Running of the race. This combined organization will be the Organizing Authority for the Worrell 1000 Reunion Race.

Eligible classes are the Nacra F20 Carbon (in compliance with current ISAF Class Rules) and the Formula 18 (with current and valid measurement certificate). The Worrell 1000 Reunion Race OA shall have final discretion as to which boats are allowed to compete.

If any body wants to put their suggestions about a boat they have in mind, they should put it out their before the final decision is made by the Organizing Authority, also give reasons why you prefer a specific boat, Or give two possibilities, and reasons behind your thoughts.

Dennis,

I assume you don't have a charter arrangement in place yet? I suspect that will be tough, multiple builders have been burned by this in the past.

My recommendation is to run the event in F18's, their are a lot of boats already in the U.S, worldwide it is the most active class, there is a better chance you can get one of the 6+ major builders to signup, and it gives life to the boats after the 2018 Worlds.

The second option, which I suspect is already being worked, is the Nacra F20c. Trouble is the cost to charter for a week is probably going to be high (on the order of what a used F18 would run) and new boats are north of $35k (per my limited knowledge). The current U.S fleet is small, with a handful of boats in Florida and 2 or 3 up in NE. Don't get me wrong, they are great boats, but I just think if you want to draw a healthy fleet the F18 remains the best option. I'll add that net leg times between the two aren't going to be substantially different.

Both have been looked at and I recently heard that maybe run a class of each,
I know they have not settled on a specific boat but want to keep it a durable and fast production boat, I’m not part of the OA but was curious to see if anybody had a good thought on it before the final decision is made.

To my knowledge, there are no other 20 foot production beach catamarans beyond the Nacra F20 series. The only other real option I would think is the Flying Phantom line, the Essential could beach/launch land relatively easily given the z-boards. Some of the new F18's have convertible trunks (Nacra and Cirrus), so to me that still remains the best option as I suspect a z-board F18 is going to be fast in breeze on reaching conditions in the right hands. Is the F20c a better overall boat still? Probably, faster in lighter conditions, more waterline and width, but again, small class.

Is a restricted class of boats what the sailors want or what the organizers want? Customer focus will be really important for this to work - most OD classes have seen declines since the last days of the Worrell. There is probably a very short list of people that have the time, resources, and desire to do a catamaran based Worrell race and I would identify who those are FIRST (assuming you haven't already) and figure out what format they would prefer. A lot of events lose site of the reality that the sailor/competitor is the customer and the race organizers are selling a product to the sailors. The pool of willing sailors is much smaller than it was 10/20 years ago so the product HAS to be precisely targeted. You also can't necessarily rely on what's been done in the past.

Some out of the box thinking may provide some results too. The only adventure style races that are growing are the Watertribe style events and the R2AK. Food for thought.

What about a F-18 class and an open class? Can either run the open as a first to finish or run ratings....

Jake, Scott,

I think you are on to something big here, with the watertribe style events in particular. That is where the sport is headed and I think for a long lasting Worrell 1000 that is where the event should focus. That may even get back to the original spirit of the race, fastest trip from the Florida Keys to Virginia Beach. Unfortunately I suspect the race liability insurance/stopover requirements etc. may drive the existing stop each night format, but maybe not, and maybe with say 5 check points, no forced overnight stops etc. there would be less organizational headaches.

Either way, an F18 class and an unlimited class would be pretty cool.

Individual classes (with minimum numbers) with open class would draw the most participants. I had to fight for that in the Florida 300 but looks like they are really pushing for one design. Glad I am not involved in race organization anymore. Problem with guys like me, I need sponsorship to do a race like this and if they pull the same minimum number, GO/NO GO, it is impossible to get sponsorship because I will not look for sponsorship for a race that probably won't happen.

I have had a sponsorship proposal ready with a list of potential sponsors but I will not start approaching sponsors until the race is a definite GO which is supposed to be decided by Monday. My proposal is a two years program with a LOT less expensive 300 mile race this year and the VERY expensive race next year which includes a charter. It would be a good way to introduce a sponsor into a major future commitment. Unfortunately, we need four teams to register before Sunday for the Florida 300 to happen. If it does not happen, there is no way I will even attempt to find sponsorship if the 1000 race will only run if minimum numbers are met.

Hint, hint...Need any teams sitting on the fence for this years Florida 300 to register by Sunday. AND if you are thinking about doing the 1000 and never did a race over 100 miles, you probably won't pass the experience qualifications for the 1000. There is minimum qualifications/experience necessary to compete. Completing the Florida 300 will probably qualify you.

Craig,

How are things looking for the 300 mile race this year? Its a no-go for me because of some other situations, including the upcoming F18 Worlds.

I will stand by Jake. If its the organizers rather than the sailors pushing for one design, I fear the event will fail. I have serious doubts charter boats will be made available, as an example the number for an F18 worlds is usually less than 10%, i.e we tend to draw 120+ boats to a Worlds with maybe 12-16 charter boats. That would mean for a 10 boat Worrell there is only 1 charter boat available...

Doesn't look good. Only six boats and they stated a minimum of 10 needed. I need to know too because of sponsorship. I can't send out proposals for something that might not happen. Hope they don't try that with the 1000. We are already close to a year out without any pertinent information.

Dennis,

Certainly interested. What is the minimum entry list in each class? When do you expect to have a final go/no go decision on the race?
