Coca Cola Hobie 16 World Championship
4 - 14 May 2004 Cancun, MEXICO

RECORD ENTRIES

A record number of 60 brand new Hobie 16s, rotating between 200 entries, will be at the starting line-up of the Coca Cola Hobie 16 World Championships, May 4-14 in Cancun, Mexico.

The boats are all being supplied by Hobie Cat Company, the Oceanside, California manufacturer of the Hobie 16. Hobie Cat Company president, Doug SKIDMORE, stepped up to the plate by giving race organisers the extra boats they needed to accommodate the outstanding racer turnout. "It is our way of encouraging as many people as possible to get out on the water and enjoy Hobie sailing and racing," commented Skidmore.

The 2004 World Championships promise to be the most exciting ever. The Open, Grand Masters, and Masters entries have already reached maximum capacities. There are still limited entries available for the Youth and Women's divisions, but they are quickly getting filled. While other sailing classes may be struggling, this unprecedented enthusiasm proves that the Hobie 16 class, the largest catamaran racing fleet in the world, is only getting stronger.

The entry list is an impressive one, including sailors from 25 different nations. Defending champions Gavin COLBY and SimonE MATTFIELD (AUS) will be back to try and reclaim their title in the open division, as will the current Women's World Champions Lauren PELEN and Lea JEANDOTT (FRA) and Youth World Champion Robbie LOVIG (AUS).
Other entrants include Enrique FIGUEROA (PUR) who is ranked 11 in the Tornado in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, up and coming young Australian match racer, Katie SPITHILL and Taylor BOOTH (AUS) the 2002 silver medallist crewing for his father Mitch who is now helming with Murray WRIGHT as his crew.

Every sailor will get to sail a different one of the 60 new Hobie 16s during each of the races. They get half an hour to prepare a boat for each race. This rule promises to match the skill of each racer with the proven performance of each Hobie 16.

Coverage will be posted on the event website via the link below.

What are the plans to sell off the boats, sails or other gear after the Worlds?

Chris, talk to your nearest dealer. A lot of the boats are already sold, but Hobie will be making special edition boats with the same sail colors.

Ruth Triglia from Hobie Cat may be able to steer you in the right directions (rtriglia@hobieco.com)

Thanks for the response, Matt. I was asking for general info purposes. Sounds like boats will be shipped back to the US and then sold through the dealers.

P.S. Good luck!

The Alter cup boats should be for sale also. I'm not sure if they will be the same boats from the Worlds or not.

36 of the boats are pre-sold to the sponsor dealer in Mexico. They have first rights to the rest and we expect that they will likely all be sold in Mexico. Sails go with them.

We are looking around at a couple of the Caribbean Islands to hold a Wave Worlds. The thought is that there are so many resorts on some of the islands and most have Waves for their customers.
We are trying to round up about 20 Waves in good shape (make sure the rudders work, etc) and then allow 40 teams in a round-robin event.
To make the round-robin work, however, we would need 20 identical sails.
Any chance Hobie Cat Co. might be interested in supplying 20 new sails and then selling them to the resorts after the event is over?
Or.., new boats?
Rick

Rick,

You need the ISAF's blessing to call an event a "Worlds"

From the ISAF website (Rules and Regulations, Part IV):
Quote
18. ISAF AND OTHER EVENTS
ISAF approval of World Championships and other Events
18.1 ISAF approval is required for any event that is described as a World Championship,
uses the word “World” in the title of the event, or any of the promoters, organizers or
any other organization officially connected with the event, represents or holds out in
any way that the event is a World Championship or does the foregoing in such a way
that the event is reasonably perceived to be a World Championship.

The section goes on (and on) about requirements, etc. probably the most critical for the Wave is that it is not an ISAF recognized class.

You can't just hold an event and call it "The Worlds."

Hmmm! Then the Galactics, the Globals, Universals, or the Whole Earth Championship.
I sort of wonder how they could stop you.., isn't there something about freedom of speech, and don't I have to be a member before they can dictate what I can and cannot do?
How do they enforce such a thing?

Rick

You became an ISAF member when you joined US Sailing, since they are the Member National Authority in this country.

In reality, they probably wouldn't notice unless somebody filed a complaint or the event got enough media coverage that they noticed. It would probably earn you a "cease and desist" letter from their lawyer.

Their ultimate punishment is banishment from international competition, but that's rare indeed. Currently, there's only 4 Argentinians that are banned. You'd have to be an awfully bad boy to earn that.

(I tried to find out what those Argentinians did to earn them suspensions, but all I could come up with was that they were convicted of a Rule 69 (Fair Sailing) violation in the Championship Week of Buenos Aires in October of 2002. The helmsman got 5 years, the three crew got 3 years each.)

Right! And there is the Kenny Pierce story. What a joke!

Matt, back to the purpose of the post. Would Hobie be willing to provide sails?
...or boats?

Rick,

If a proposal were made for an event, Hobie Cat would look at it. For Hobie Cat to provide boats, typically there is a charter fee to help cover some of the costs. This includes depreciation of the boats, assembly and maintenance labor, travel, accommodation, freight and more. It is also MUCH easier if the organizers can guarantee the sale of the boats after the event or at least a major portion of them. That might be possible in a resort area where rental locations could buy the boats. The proposal would have to be highly detailed to be considered.
