[Since there was a lot of interest in the foiling topics, recently, I thought you might be interested in this if you're around the Bay area. A link to more details is at the bottom of this post. --Dean]

Hydrofoil Sailboat Event - boats that fly

When: May 13 -14 2005
Hosted By: Bay View Boat Club, Kayak Connection
Location: San Francisco Bay / China Basin

This will be a open 2 day class C event for foiled sailboats to record speeds with GPS.
It will also provide foiled sailors a chance to get together and share their experience and expertise.
The goal is to get many sailors flying above the water in sailboats.

The location picked (China Basin) is ideally suited for foiled flight.
Winds come from the west through the South San Francisco / Diamond Heights cut (and out over the bay).
Seasonal winds can expect a steady 25 knots.
The seas are relatively calm.

Within site of the Giants Baseball park and MCovey Cove where Berry Bonds blasts homers into the water. The Bay
Bridge, with container and military ships passing under it. Cruising toward Oakland or other harbors south.

Parking and launching is free for boats with trailers.
Expecting Windrider Raves, Hobie Trifoiler, Moths, other foiled sailboats.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what Dan Ketterman brother of the Hobie trifoiler designer had to say about this upcoming event.
"I will bring a Hobie TriFoiler and my crew/wife. I already contacted another owner of a TriFoiler in SF area and he is interested. I use to try to keep in touch with all the owners, but over time, a lot of them have lost interest and sold their boat. I will try to reestablish contact with more guys later. I should call Russel Long. He is the owner of Long Shot. World record holder in the 500 meter long class. He might have some sponsor connections! He has campaigned many boats"

So as you can see this event is beginning develop. Tell all your freinds who are interested in learning about foiled sailboats of all kinds.
Looks like we have about 6 Raves interested so far. Not only will this be a sailing event but also get a chance to talk with the people how helped created and use these unique sailboats.

This is real cool. If I can, maybe I'll get my camera and try to make and post some pictures from this.

Hi, Jake,

Sadly, I will be in Paris [self-edited remark about Paris Hilton] when all the action hits the water in S.F.. I am still trying to find a place that may sell an ORMA 60 souvenir of some kind. So far, my internet search has been a barren one. The French are not so thrilled to wear blazing advertising as much as Americans so I may end up with nothing more than a Wichard shackle "...just like the one used on Fujicolor!" If you give me a nickel I'll show it to you when we meet in Fort Walton.

Try writing emails to the teams. It is easy to find the addresses in their websites. I bet they will find something to sell to you. Hopefully not schackles...

UHMWPE brand in Europe is "Dyneema". "Spectra" is a US brand for the same stuff. But this is old stuff. Maybe a PBO rope with Dyneema cover. I heard they use it in the shrouds and stays...
