Hi, I'm a new guy to this forum, but I've been sailing Hobies since 1983. I looked at Murray's and they only have those "lockers" for $800 plus shipping. Short of building a plywood box, aren't there some other options? Any other vendors?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim:

Go to any plumbing/sewer supply dealer and buy a section of 12" sewer pipe that's corrugated on the outside and smooth on the inside. It only comes in 20' lengths and will cost about $180. Order four end caps. When it comes in, have it cut into two equal 10' sections. Install 5" plastic air vents on each end cap. drill holes in the end cap for a bungee that will attach to the pipe. Mount the pipe to your trailer with stainless steel straps that you can find at your Home Depot.

Get yourself a buddy; for about $110 you have a perfect sail box for your trailer that will never rust or wear out. Maybe every four years you replace the bungees.

Good luck.

Wyatt

Concerning plastic pipe, there are reginal differences. What is cheap one place, can be expensive somewhere else. It depends on what the supply companies stock, which depends on building codes and demand. Take a look at say the 2 cheapest 12" pipes they have.

Also take a look around. For example plastic barrels are cheap in south Texas, old sprayer tanks can be had for free some places and one year it seemed every sailor had had nylon sail tubes when a local plant changed product lines.

If you are willing to spend $800, check the local aluminium tool box builders. For that much you can have a box that is really waterproof and will outlast 3 boats.

If you have ever thought about building a boat, an epoxy/glass/marine plywood box will last a long time and let you know if you are going to really hate building.

I also use the black plastic pipe.
The technical name for it is; HDPE Type S (high density polyethelene, smooth liner).
The two biggest manufacturers are Hancor and ADS.

A 12" pipe can easily hold two sets of sails.
A 10" is big enough for one set.
I prefer to have a second 6" tube for the boom, tiller extension, spare tiller extension, and spare tiller connector.

I have a truck toolbox($80) mounted on the tongue for the bulky items.

Buy one of ours!
We have been manufacturing and selling fibreglass sail/storage box's for cats for over 25 years here in Australia along with our range of cats, The sail box's suit all sized cats and trailers. The current price for a fibreglass sail box (in whatever colour you like) is $350,00 Australian, or $268.38 US. (even cheaper if exported as it is then not subject to our GST of 10%)

Haven't got a clue, that is something that we have always left to the purchaser.
