I hate to hijack this post, but really quick...

Barry, I used to sail in Salem Sound until I moved this spring. Do you happen to know what kind of cat Rosebud is? It's the large, red one at the mouth of Salem Harbor just off of Naugus Head.

I moved inland myself. I guess I need to change my location.

Rosebud is a euro F28 that has been modified and lightened. A few friends have raced the boat and stated that it was a real bear when the wind is over 15. I have raced against it a few times and the larger tri seem to be faster. We didn’t have any problem with it in 15 knots downwind.

Thanks, Barry. Actually I like the sailing in Salem better for beach cats. There are very few places to launch down here and none of them are free. I guess I got spoiled with Sandy Point on Water street. Plus, the water up there is much cleaner and doesn't stain my boat.

Too bad I hadn't checked out this forrum while I was still up there. I was always looking for other cat sailors in the area.

I'll bet those sails would look really good with a black spinnaker huh?

Who made your sail? The one you sent back and the one with the bad boltrope. I too have had a problem with sails.I sent one back because of poor workmanship.N-20

Elliot loft made both.
They blamed it on the "rope Guy" for sending them a smaller and stretcher bolt rope. They wanted the dealer to get it replaced locally and for me to keep the sail. I said NO! They are sending me a new one. I feel for the local dealers because they get hurt the worse. The margins are so small, any extra time spent on a sale are profit killers.

Barry, I think most new employees in a sailmaking business starts with finishing sails. Installing grommets, boltropes, fittings etc. so that's probably where you will see most problems.

I know from my literature that getting boltropes with consistent quality/properties was a big concern earlier when dacron was a new cloth.

No problem on the ride, I was bushwhacked on Saturday after roasting in my tent all night. The $109 I spent on a hotel room for saturday night was the best investment I've ever made.

I was actually in Baltimore all week but had to come back to boring ole NC for more work. I'll definitely take you up on your offer. Although I don't know when I'll be able to fit in a trip "home" anytime soon. :-/

I think over the years I bought ~ 10-12 new sails for Nacra 6.0's or 5.8. The quality control from EP has been dreadfull. When I got my last nacra 6.0 new in 2002 the mainsail had a stupidly long luff. the first time I put it up the mast, I thought they have given me a short mast. I had to cut 5" off the bottom of the sail to downhaul it.
Of the 6.0 sails I have owned, from vintage 1994 to vintage 2002 the measurements varied by up to 10 inches on luff lenght and 2.5" on width. Jibs varied a couple of inches on foot and luff measurements.

Good thing they are one design! I would not mind it so much if they did not charge premium dollars for them.

I have had new sails missing all the batten tie grommets, missing batten caps. Batten caps looking like they were peened on with a brick, some sails came with 1/4" rivets in the headboards, others had 1/8" rivets that needed reworking in less then 10 days of sailing.

On the other hand, I got 3 of 4 sails from EP that were awesome. If I had a bunch of money I would order 4 mains and 4 jibs a year, 3 months apart so they came from different batches and just resell the bad ones.

Contrast that to the quality of A class sails from Goodall, Ashbey, Ulman or DN sails by henry Bosset or 1D which are consistantly good and rarely have problems.
