No - but that was sometime during the 2 hours we were waiting for a new race and I was searching for somebody on a monohull with spare beer. Thankfully Mosley came through. It does look like I hadn't yet released the downhaul though...

Don't give Trey too hard of a time about getting a regatta story on the site, he's out at his boat yard making money for this year's Tybee.

I like to think that I did my part to get Trey through at least a small part of that journey.

I like to think you did too, Jack... Thanks for the business. Too bad I blew it all cheap beer and expensive hookers (not really).

Who's boat was that with the broken hounds?

I'm replacing mine as a small stretch of the part is evident. That part is about $18 (another $12 for the monel rivets).

You can prevent this by putting washers on the shroud/forestay shackle to keep it from wiggling while sailing from what I understand...

Good for any Tybee team to have an extra one of those...

Here's the solution (or at least to aid in longevity)...and Trey - I forgot to give you the plastic for this!

Jake,

Thanks for posting the pic - it's very illustrative. The houndshead on my Isotope broke on the last racing day in October and I need to replace it over the winter. I like the idea of shimming the shackle and think I'll add it to my rig.

I was fortunate - although the houndshead broke, it did not fail completely. It would have been a shame to miss the best wind of the season at Kerr Lake (pushing 15 knots). I had a "holy ****" moment on the beach after unstepping the mast though. One side of the houndshead had parted completely. I was very lucky not to have been dismasted.

Regards,
Eric - Isotope 42

I can say that the hound in that picture was originally bent considerably to port before I added the spacers. I assume it was from the shackle getting bound up somehow. I did not make any effort to straighten the hound when I installed the spacers - but it mostly straightened itself when sailing the first time with the spacers. Regardless, it's certainly advisable to remove everything periodically to check for stress cracking. Along with eliminating a spinnaker or spinnaker halyard pinch point, the spacers keep the shackle from "sawing" back and forth through tacks and helps to align the stress loads better.

Jake, What did you use to make the spacers?

A solid piece of Delrin (plastic) rod...I drilled out the center on a lengthy section and then cut to fit.

you can also get the plastic washers at your local hardware or home improvement store. You may have to cut them down to size.

Jake and I noticed a very scary Hound on the DLW just before the Tybee in 2003. We worried about that thing the whole way, even bought a new hound just in case. We sured it up with some Amsteel, and sailed the whole way, but man did it look scary. I think we checked it out the first couple of days then decided it was best if we didnt look at it anymore. You know, what you dont know cant hurt you...
The washers are the ticket, I got mine at lowes and sanded them down to fit.

The men were amazed, and said, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" Matthew 8:27
