Oh wait...it is heavier aloft and when you have very little righting moment, the gains for adding the weight up high are small - maybe that's it?

Good point, that 49 mast was indeed lighter then my (same length) all alu F16 mast.

Our spinnaker cat apparent wind is more direct than theirs and we still rotate to 90 degrees downwind.

Some of us are reducing mast rotation now on cats even while sailing downwind, see discussion on the F16 forum of say 3 weeks ago. However, their is a limit somewhere and mast damage will be part of it. Faster however it is for sure.

Of course we're straying off topic to why not rotating, but heres one of an Open 60, hmmm rotating mast, twin dagger boards, twin rudders that kick up (not visible in pic) what will they think of next (hint- twin hulls?)

They already have one beam to each side, so three hulls are more likely...

Your observation is correct and it reappears from time to time in discussion forums.

I like to tease monohull adicts by saying that the Open 60 class, Volvo 70, 49er, etc. are clearly in the middle of a Darwinian-type evolution from monohull to multihull.

Another way to say the same thing:
Monohulls are following an evolutionary path that will eventually arrive to a multihull of one kind or another. However, they are doing it the hard way, so lots of strange creatures will face extinction until they get to where we are now.

I've made the same observation...the problem is that the monohullers that are striving to achieve the stability and speed of catamarans are failing in some very critical structural areas and are becoming LESS safe than the multi-hulls they continuously bash.

Guys:

I think the Volvo 60 (I believe that is it) shows that trying to make the boats so light has made them VERY dangerous and not structurally sound. There has to be a time when safety should come first BEFORE someone dies

Jake,
The writing on the mast was from the measurer.
