Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Is it an optical illusion, or are the hulls "wracking" a lot in the above picture? That's just an optical illusion - what you don't see is the leeward bow underwater. The boom is a round extrusion - which is something new from Performance Catamarans. Several booms were bent during capsizes in the breeze on Monday and we had to replace several of them with the old-style rectangular boom.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | so would you say jake... ixnay on the tube booms? I wouldn't say...although we have not had any break from sheet pressure. They are aluminum with black anodizing. They are a bit lighter than the original boom.

Posts: 5,590 Naples, FL | I would almost expect that to be the case at this event regardless of what boat is used.
High gusty winds, steep choppy seas, and experienced sailors who regularly push the performance envelope on boat design.
Also, throw in the fact there are no chicken lines, footstraps, or even non-skid (other than factory spec) strips.
I would venture a guess that sailors used to using chicken lines, footstraps, etc. are used to driving the boats this hard, but NOT used to sliding all over them when the boat stuffs into the back of a big wave, or gets slammed with a huge puff with the spin up.
I'm interested to find out why there have been a few booms break during pitchpoles, but no spin poles/snuffers (of course, I'm not there so I don't know if this is the case). Did the crew hit the boom during the maneuver?
I could see a 170+ lb person striking the boom (under heavy mainsheet tension) on the side during a capsize/pitchpole causing major problems....

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | I also uploaded some superb short movies again graciously provided by PTP. I put them up here: link . I think it was '812' that showed Daniel nearly pitchpoling. Thanks again Patrick! (at this moment they're still uploading and I've got to head to the beach...give it a little bit).

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | It's because they are STILL uploading. I don't know how much longer it will be because I'm doing it through a website instead of my FTP software. It's 160Mb worth of movies and apparently this connection is pretty asymetrical.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | PTP, Undoubtedly...you have taken some great material there! I do want you to know, however, that I hope to never have your "bad luck magic wand" pointed in my direction! PS...one of your shots will likely be on the front page of US Sailing tonight. Actually....I just checked and it's there already. GREAT shot of the winners from Day 2! www.ussailing.org

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | A near miss with a committee boat. This is Nelson/Hall with the yellow spinnaker and Tomko was to the outside...watch the helm twitch closely as Tomko changed his mind a couple of times about how to get around Nelson and the committee boat.
