Can you be more specific? Wrightsville Beach prohibits boats on the beach and unless you own land on Banks Channel or rent a spot at the Blockade Runner, your access is limited. WB used to be great about Hobies and would allow yearly passes to leave your boat on the beach, but that was done away with about 10 years ago. I even got a ticket on my old vintage H16 sailing w/ my 2 daughters last year for an expired NC registration. $125! The wildlife officers are real $%*&s there. Carolina Beach was more leanient and has some auto access. Funny thing.... the City Council has a beach scape with Hobies located behind their seats. Fort Fisher allows allows auto access, so you would be able to pull a trailer on the beach if you have 4 WD. If you are in OBX, there is a spot at Rodanthe where our Outer Bank Regatta is, that may give you access to the sound side.

This trip I will be in the wrightsville beach area, I don't have 4x4, so that limits some access. I don't mind driving and hour or so if the sailing is good. Also I have very limited ocean sailing so a beginner spot would be good. I have a H-18 and no cat trax. Someone else mentioned fort fissure, where do you suggest.

And thanks for the info.

Blockade Runner used to allow you to launch a boat from their Sailing Center (Banks Channel side) For a fee of course. You may want to call them. There is good open water there and down to the inlet. If it's a good day, you can go through the inlet and beach it over on Masonboro Island. (as long as you have enough confidence to take it back through the surf) Be sure to have your registration up to date.. I was sailing on the back side of Masonboro when I got my ticket. Have fun... I'll be there this weekend and will probably take my girls out on the old 16 (tequila sunrise sails)

Even though I race the F18 mostly, I'm doing a few races with my 10 year old daughter on a H16 (newer the beach beater) We're doing the Mayor's Cup in Greensboro... June 3-4 Then going to OBX- Duck NC with the F18 for the Duck Cup on June 10-11. I've never done it before but I hear it is great sailing in the Currituck Sound... Flat water and great beach breeze. Try to make one of these events.

Holy smokes there are tons of places to launch there.

Theres the public dock right by the south bridge on wrightsville. Watch your mast for the powerlines.

Sail south, exit Masonboro inlet and you're in the ocean.

Also, along the main drag (Highway 70 I tinks) anywhere from Emerald Isle to Beaufort there are TONS of ramps leading to the sound side.

Mark, watch your boards at the Duck Cup. VERY shallow.

I would not use the ramp for a cat because you have to go through a draw bridge that opens on the half hour. The channel is very narrow and the current is around 4 knots and lots of boat traffic. I would launch at the Blockade Runner but bring a lot of quaters to feed the meters

Yea, I forgot about the meters.. Is there a ramp at the Carolina Beach bridge or State Park? That would be a good area with access to the ocean. There may be some places near Topsail also.

Thanks for the tip about the boards at the Duck Cup... You guys going to be able to make it? It would be nice to get a good turnout of F20s and F18s.

I don't know, I think the pennies are being pinched for some Statue of Liberty race.

Mark, you'll be fine for the buoy race, but be careful during the distance race. I sailed the weekly summer series there and never had a problem with shallow water. It's some of the best soundside sailing on the OBX. If you're that worried about it, you could come join your long lost friends back in the 16 class. There should be a good amount of F18s and 20s that come down from the VA Beach area.

Anytime you are on the Outer Banks you can come up and launch and sail at Nor'Banks Sailing in Duck. We try and help out all non-powerered craft looking for access. You can also trailer your boat on the beach North of Corolla and launch in the Ocean. No rules or fees, just launch the boat and sail.

The Duck Cup is June 9th and 10th and is a fun race weekend. We do buoys on Saturday and a distance race around the Currituck Sound on Sunday (we have a full moon Saturday night and are planning to do a little full moon race/cruise this year). The Southern Part of the Currituck Sound runs about 6-10 feet deep once you are clear of the shoals along the shoreline which extend out from 150-250 yards. We have great small boat racing conditions with steady winds and very little other boat traffic due to limited access to this part of the Sound and that the fishing is not very good.

Come and join us at the Duck Cup(or visit us anytime) and see the best sailing location on the Outer Banks (not that I am biased or anything:)
You actually may get to run into Todd Hart if you are lucky!!

I think there is a greater probability in winning the lottery.

Velocity Boys,including Derek.
Best way to find out would be to bring a boat and put your beer where your yap is. Tad this is almost your backyard, if you sail in the garbage slew over this, you definitely need to get your sugar checked. Statue race is fun but there's alot of stuff to hit, none of that at the Duck Cup. Perfect location great rigging area and GOOD times. You oughta do both. But if your skeered that's OK too.
And by the way congrats on the Tybee, it stinks you had to bail. That legs a B***h anyway ya slice it.
Ya better come to the Duck Cup, it kicks "noodle".

Hope to see ya there.
Team Cat Fever , which might even include that Todd jerk.

What do you recommend for accommodations? I googled and found the Adventure Bound Campground nearby. Is it ok or are there any reasonable hotels nearby?

There's not going to be many reasonably priced accommodations now that we're in season. The Hampton Inn and Sanderling Inn are just to the north and the new Hilton is south in Kitty Hawk. Kill Devil Hills will be your best bet for reasonably priced places.

You may be able to get away with camping up North! The key part of that is "may be able". There is a Holiday Inn Express in Kitty Hawk that should be more reasonable and is only a few miles past the Hilton. Derek are you here this Summer? I also heard that there is plenty of room at Todd's house !!

I was thinking of camping in Jon's country club of a yard, complete with hot tub.

Jon, I'm here this summer. I haven't had a chance to get the Hobie out because I've been busy playing on a Henderson 30 in Colington Harbour. It should be ready to roll within the next week.

I was going to say anyone could camp at my place, but I don't know why you would want to when you could stay at Jon's country club complete with a hot tub.

Duck Cup Update (first of all it is the 10th and 11th, my bad!). It looks like good weather with Sunny Skies and West Winds from a High Pressure on Saturday and a Seabreeze on Sunday. We have a good group of about 15 boats already committed. I know that Mark was trying to drum up some more F-18's. This is a great location that hardly anyone knows about and I hope to see more boats this weekend. The Full Moon race on Saturday night will be entertaining (especially with Todd trying to decide between the next buoy or Sunset Grille!).
