Posts: 1,252 California | PRESS RELEASE FOR IMEDIATE RELEASE 9/8/06 The 36th Hobie 16 North American Championship, aka: the Continentals, starts Monday off Roger Wheeler Beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The regatta will continue through Friday. Sailors from fourteen states and five countries have pre-registered for the event. For Hobie 16 racers from Guatemala to Canada this is the year’s main event. Year after year the 16 Continentals attracts the biggest one-design catamaran fleet on the continent with the competition and the parties to match. Some come to measure their skills against the best and some for the parties but everyone comes to celebrate this simple one-design that started it all. This year’s championship will double as the country qualifier for the 2007 Pan American Games. The top four countries from the NAs will qualify for the Pan Am games. Nine past champions will be racing this week making this event as tough as ever. A complete list of past champions and daily updates during the week can be found at www.HCA-NA.org | | | Re: 36th Hobie 16 North American Championship

Posts: 736 Westport, Ma. U.S.A. | This should be one of the hippest happenings in the hemisphere! I went down Saturday to see if I could help out at all. Mapquest directions were wrong, but I did find it.Beautiful venue! It's right on the Atlantic Ocean. There are a series of breakwaters along the shore, and another quite a distance out running parralell to the beach, with enough room to set courses if it's too wild on the outside. The morning started off slow, but as the day progressed we had more and more boats show up. It was great to meet so many people that I've only known from this forum, and race results! I found it very exciting to meet folks from all over that came to race at this terrific event! My guess is that Fleet 204 had the largest contingent. Their dealer showed up with five boats stacked on a trailer! Never saw that before! Then there's that crew from Jersey (and Penn.)that includes some converts from the 17 class like Jim Glanden, and Dan Ward! I met two guys from Venezuela, a couple from Australia, and some really fun and interesting folks from the left coast! A good number of Fleet brothers and sisters showed up to help for the day, and it was great to see them as well. A core group of women organized the registration, led by Barbara "Super" Powers, Tina Connors,Marie Esten, and Joy(?). What a great team they are! Sean Esten, Dave Heroux, and the rest of us guys weighed boats, got the marks ready. P.U. arrived and was there helping measure anchor lines for the marks etc. Bob Packet(?) one of our senior 17 sailors, was there lifting boats as they were weighed all afternoon, despite a recent operation/procedure! How wonderful is that devotion to the sport?! As the day faded we closed up shop, and most folks headed off to dinner. I went to a pub down the street with Mike Levesque, Sean and Marie. We had a nice meal and went back to the beach, where Mike was going to stay as security. I found John (?) from S. Cal. working away on his charter boat with just a headlamp. I got my headlights aimed at the boat and went to see what he was up to. He'd done quite a bit of fixing up, and tuning. By the time he finished, I felt I had a real friend. I gave him a ride back to his Inn, and we met up with Gordo, Ann, and Marcy. They hadn't had dinner yet, and I was having too much fun to leave, so we all went to a restaurant around the corner. What a great day! I think it'll be a really good week down there! | | | Re: See you guys on Thursday night

Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | Hope everyone pops into the race blog for the 16 nationals... I am sure you know someone from your local fleet who is competeing and it's great to see how they are doing.
It would appear that those sailors not from the USA and who sail in the ocean are once again kicking our a collective butts!
Great job with the reporting. Cumulative Results are posted quickly as well!

Posts: 736 Westport, Ma. U.S.A. | It was a really good week in Rhode Island! Monday was a little exteme, and a lot of people got beat up on the course. Almost everyone came back Tuesday! Conditions varied from Monday's crazy, to little/no wind, under a sunny sky, to 10 to 15 amidst down pours, for the rest of the week. Enrique and Carla really were stellar. There were some really good competitors! It exemplified what "one design" racing is all about. My Fleet officers put out the call for volunteers early in the year, saying what an honor it is to host this event. I certainly feel honored to be associated with it, even if my major contribution was just delivering pizza! I hope all the competitors are proud of themselves, regardless of their results! My thanks and congratulations to all concerned! | | | Re: 36th Hobie 16 North American Championship CROW

Posts: 393 Syracuse,N.Y | Thanks for the comments Brian. I just relized that I met you Saturday when I showed up. It's always fun to put the screen names together with people. As you said: Monday was tough out there. Probably the toughest wind/wave combo I have ever sailed. They said they had 16knots with gusts to 25knots. I think it was a 4 hour gust. The swells caused by the huricane were huge. I heard comments from two past champions and ocean sailors that they were some of the biggest they had sailed. Sarah and I at a start in a breeze. She's 11 years old and 80lbs. Heading to finish on a swell. The pictures really don't do it justice. Most of the fleet flipped at one time or another. Juani(2nd place overall) flipped 6 times on Monday. Thank You to all in your Fleet that put on a great event.

Posts: 334 Thunder Bay ON CAN | Just having fun with you Rhodysail.Hard for a guy sitting at home wishing he was there to be critical of the top finishing N.A.Did your results qualify you for the Pan Ams?I think the top finishing Canadian automatically qualified regardles of his position. Looked like it was a great event. Enrique F. seems like he is almost unbeatable.Does not hurt with starts like this. http://www.hcana.hobieclass.com/site/hob...s/IMG_2662.html | | |
