I haven't seen a job like that for a long time, must have been a good'n.
What type of boat hit you? How fast was it goin?
Anyway, thats a real shame mate, but the good news is you can build a new set of hulls and you've already got everything to put on it.

Damn shame it had to happen at all, but at the start of the season?

Are you covered by insurance for repairs ?
My Mozzie broke up at the Victorian state titles in 2004 and was written off by the insurance company. I had the boat builder rebuild the damaged hull with the money because the insurance company said that they didn't want the scrap timber and I was free to take it if I wanted.
The alternative is to buy a new set of glass/composite hulls. See the Mosquito web site for details and price.

Peter

Posts: 951 Brisbane, Queensland, Australi... | Didn't hit any boat, it was the shear power of the wind that did the damage. The forestay bridle ripped it to leeward and up a bit.
I'd been saying we would sail it till the hulls died and then see what would happen. They were always of dubious structural integrity. It just happened a bit earlier than I wanted it to, was hoping to get a full season out of them.
My first impression is that it actually failed on the outboard side first then zippered the rest of the hull off. Notice the very straight clean fracture down the outboard side.
Yeah outboard side had double layer of ply at top for structural shear strake, can't remember inboard side details. The other indicator of failure at the outside was a black, partially rotted deck to hull join stringer right at the failure.
I was keen to buy new hulls, but initial investigation on one of the mosquito websites suggests building may be more cost effective. And if I build, I may do a new design with more freeboard, and make it an F16. Obviously not to full spec, still getting used to sailing cats. Have to weigh up the options first.
Anyone want a brand new mosquito excluding hulls, I've replaced everything else within the last season?

Posts: 943 East Gippsland, Australia | It looks like you are going to miss out on some sailing for a while. Very frustrating for you.
If you want to build new plywood hulls and make changes toward an F16 design you may as well invest in a set of Blade plans and build something that will keep you entertained for years. Use your existing rig for now and upgrade the bits and pieces later. There will also be some others around to race against eventually.
The question is, how low was your bridle, and had you changed it at all? There are a few (mainly home built) Mosquitos that were built very light for cat rig only. Some even had twin forestays. I've seen one of these rig a spinnaker and survive, but I would feel nervous using a low bridle on a boat like that.

Posts: 556 Somers, Westernport Bay, Victo... | Nick,
Are you able to crew for someone else while you get your hulls sorted out ?
After a catastrophic failure like that you might find some kind soul in your club who takes pity on you and gives you a regular position or at least a stand-in on the emergency list. At least then you'll be able to get your weekly sailing fix.

Posts: 177 Sydney/Northern Beaches | You might want to check out the spares for sale on ebay. There is a few sets of hulls which may suit and loads more for $200 and some of it sounds like its in good nick and hes in QLD. Use catamaran for you search word to find it. Happy hunting...

Unregistered | Hi Ncik,
been there done that. You can buy "Altered" just the platform if you like.
I would just pick up another cheap Mossie if I was you, I have seen some around very cheap over the years as all the rig is rubbish, but you have that fixed.
What ever you do don't let it stop you sailing something.
