Where is a good place to a sail a beach cat in Costa Rica? I'm toying with the idea of retiring down there.

Friends who used to live there said the west coast is the best place for beaches.

There is a little city called Liberia on their west coast, north west of their capital, San Jose. We (Delta Air Lines http://www.Delta.com the airport is listed as LIR, $599 round trip from ATL, plus tax of course, shameless plug! ) haul a lot of surfer dudes down there because "The Break" is supposed to be fantastic, with thousands of miles of open ocean for the swell to run.

I was there last summer, just in and out, never got to a beach, but all the major US carriers had flights in there. I was told the business is up about 800% since the land grab is on.

It was very un-developed last year, but our First Class section was full of developers and realators who are buying up all that virgin ocean front property and putting in resorts and golf courses. I didn't see any sailboats though, you might have the place all to yourself for a while!

There were very few roads down to the beaches, mostly only in the few resorts could you get a cat to the water. It reminded me of the Oregon coast. Trees right up to the beach, sharp drop into a big ocean and deep water. Then there is launching through that wave break the surfers love. It looked beautiful, but you know how that song goes: "Call some place Paradise, kiss it goodbye..."
