I thought it was Apocalypse Now, but Google tells me that it was inherited from Heart of Darkness, the book on which the film was based. Learn something everyday...

"Where did "the horror, the horror" and "oh the humanity" come from?"

These were the words broadcast over radio and later spliced with the newsreel film footage, by the reporter who was witnessing the arrival of the Hindenburg - the German dirigible - at Lakehurst New Jersey in the late 30.s, when it suddenly burst into flames and come crashing to the ground.

I certainly believe the Tikster's right on this one. It's from Joseph Conrad's book Heart Of Darkness which Apocalypse Now was based on. The character Kurtz said the words I believe. I still think Victory was one of Conrad's better books though. Heart of Darkness was written around 1898 or so. A good sailing story he wrote is Youth. Typhoon is also good if you like old sea stories............

I read Victory a long time ago and remember that it is good. Heart of Darkness was also very good. Another great quotation from heart of darkness
"Your strength is an accident arising from the weakness of others."
It can be changed to show any relative issue- intelligence, beauty, speed, etc

Wait a minute, how can Heart of Darkness be the book for which Appocolypse Now is based, if the movie is about the Viet Nam war? Was there another war with hellicopters, surfing, weed, Hendrix, and Marlin Brando in the 1890's?? Or was it based on wiping out the Indians? I mean, they at least smoked the payote.

It was a "modern" adaptation of Heart of Darkness. It holds pretty well to the book for the most part. about a guy going "native" and a little insane (but is he?) and the journey to go find him and what that guy learns/figures out/discovers on the way about himself.
I wrote a paper in college on the existential aspects of the book (yes, liberal arts, great college)

Vietnam was just the setting. The thing is based on Heart of Darkness. That is where that Dude Kurtz came from. It even says this in the credits for the movie..........

But I don't believe this (from Kurtz) was in the book " They won't let pilots put the word F#%k on their airplanes; yet they will let them drop Naplam on human beings."

That dude Timbo was probably an engineering major or something!!

english was Conrad's second (third? fourth?) language and he was very good with it but, no, I don't think he would have put that in the book

yeah, probably engineering major. Hell, I was a psych major with bio and chem minors
BA Wabash College, Indiana

. . .the movie is about the Viet Nam war?

Not exactly. The real theme is man's inhumanity to man.

HOD is about the destructive impact of European colonialism on native African cultures. Lots of environmental degradation, death, dead bodies decomposing. And, the debilation of European culture when taken out of its natural environment i.e. Europe. Kurtz loses his humanity, machines stop working.

Apocalypse Now follows those same themes. Think of the madness in the scene along the DMZ where no one is in change. It is an anti-war movie, specifically an anti-Viet Nam War movie.

I would say that that is a part of the book but I think it is more about the internal/introspective perspective and realizing how crazy we can be... "he came to a door and looked inside..." kind of thing.

Supposedly orson wells was going to try to make HOD into a movie but didn't figure he could get it right so he did Citizen Kane instead.

An enginering major for the first two years, then got a job flying night freight so I had to transfer into business to finish in 4 years.

Favorite lines from the movie?

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning, smells like Victory!"

Yeah, but it looks like the only thing " they " will let YOU write on the side of your aeroplane is DELTA!

" A Spear ? " another good one.

Plus surfing behind the Patrol Boat was awesome. And the surfer dude with the arrow through his head. But the best was that skinny little dancing blonde girl in the blue(with the two pistols!!)........I just can't remember the song they were playing ......
