I thought it was Apocalypse Now, but Google tells me that it was inherited from Heart of Darkness, the book on which the film was based. Learn something everyday... and "oh the humanity" come from? Was there another war with hellicopters, surfing, weed, Hendrix, and Marlin Brando in the 1890's?? Or was it based on wiping out the Indians? HOD is about the destructive impact of European colonialism on native African cultures. Lots of environmental degradation, death, dead bodies decomposing. And, the debilation of European culture when taken out of its natural environment i.e. Europe. Kurtz loses his humanity, machines stop working. Apocalypse Now follows those same themes. Think of the madness in the scene along the DMZ where no one is in change. It is an anti-war movie, specifically an anti-Viet Nam War movie.

I would say that that is a part of the book but I think it is more about the internal/introspective perspective and realizing how crazy we can be... "he came to a door and looked inside..." kind of thing.
