The salt systems are cheaper to operate but... (I'll get to the but in a minute). No more chlorine tablets and no more smell. The salt system does convert salt to chlorine and is very effective in keeping the pool algae free.
Now the but. The system is made up of two components: the controller and the generator. The entire system can be had on the web for about $1000. The generator will get clogged with minerals in the water. It can be cleaned by soaking it in a mixture of muriatic acid and water to clean but after five years the generator is pretty much toast. A replacement can be had for $395.
So, if you don't like the tablet chlorine smell and don't mind shelling out $395 every five years, a salt system is the way to go. It might be worth while to see how much chlorine would cost over a five year period. The salt system might be cheaper.
