Is there a way to induce the bend and then tighten the wires to hold it?

Yes there is, but you go about it sort of backwards from the way you stated it. The process goes something like this:

With the mast already tensioned, remove the diamond wire on one side by pulling with two hands and pushing the diamond spreader portion of the mast with one or two of your feet. Two if seated, one if standing.

Tighten up the wires some more (make a guess) and then use the same bowing technique to replace the diamond wire onto the spreader tip.

Measure and repeat as necessary. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Turning the turnbuckles when they are fully loaded is asking for galling and seizure in the turnbuckle bolts.
