That's correct.

If it's set up right it should just hook on when you've pulled the halyard all the way. note... need to keep pointed into the wind to keep ring and hook lined up.

For releasing... pull hard on the halyard to lift the ring off the hook and rotate the mast which allows the ring to "miss" the hook as you release the halyard.
