Whilst derigging the other day at Cleveland after the Peel Island Marathon, Ross Guinea of Nacra Australia approached me and commented on my Main Halyard system. My main Halyard is 4mm spectra which runs to a block at the top of the mast then back down the side of the mast, where it ties off at the bottom of the mast. Ross was telling me that by doing this, when the downhaul is put on, the mast goes into compression, as such wont bend the way it is suppose to, as such the sail wont flatten properly, so consequently my downhaul isnt doing anything. Being who he is im inclined to take his word for it, so im very much considering changing to a hook and ring at the top of the mast.

Any thoughts/comments/experiences?

Cheers.
Michael.
