A business friend of mine and I were discussing Cat Sailing today and the question came up of just how big is this sport. I could not give him a definitive answer...I know I just purchased a new I-20 sail for the Tybee 500 and sail number was #509, but that's just the sail number, not hull number. Does anyone have a good idea how many 18 and 20 foot cats get sold each year in North America? Europe? Elsewhere?
When we try to get sponsors for our events that want to sell shoes and clothes and sun glasses, etc. to our fellow Cat sailors... how many of us are out there.
I know John Williams was running a Demographic study on this forum a little while ago...what were the results???
I've sponsored teams in the Worrell 1000 because I love the sport and to be honest it does have significant recognition outside the Cat sailing world and has proven useful in my design and engineering business as a "good will" advertising exposure at a minimum.
Anyone with some facts or statistics please let me know.
All the best,
