IMHO:
42 really means that in the time it takes to come up with an ideal solution, a decent solution could have been implemented and much pain and suffering avoided.
Just going sailing would seem to be a decent solution in this context ;-)
42 was in reference to the mice. The mice were the only ones who knew the question.
