I bought an old H16, which is kind of a beater, but I'm enjoying learning to sail on it. It has one persistent problem though.

When hoisting the main, the bolt-rope often slips out of the track, jamming the sail and forcing me to let it down a bit to clear the jam. Consequently it takes a long time to get the main up. Even if I carefully guide the main into the track I still manage to jam it several times on each hoist.

I have seen other Hobies with a steel fitting with a "C" cross section attached at the entry to the track. This looks like it might help, it it can be retrofitted and it it doesn't jam too.

My mast is an old one, metal all the way up with a single sheave at the top. There is no evidence that a fitting was ever there. It looks like it would be easy enough to drill and tap holes for the fitting if I can find one.

Has anyone retrofitted one of these? Was there room in the entryway to the track, or did you have to enlarge it? Did it still jam with the fitting?
