Replacing the stainless 'wire' for the dolphin striker is pretty easy and you don't need to take the boat apart. That is, if there isn't too much corrosion where the rods inserts into the castings.

Cut the wire and bend it so that you have some leverage on it. Remove the nut on the outside of the casting and use the bend you have to wiggle it loose and pull it out.

Insert the new wire into the dolphin striker and then insert it into one of the castings, but don't put the nut on. The second casting is tough because you have to bend the wire to get it in and it is thick. It is definitely easier to get it in with the casting off, but you don't need to remove them. When you get it in, tighten the nuts so that there is just enough tension to take the slop out of the wire.
