Dave,

people bog and paint aluminium boats all the time. You need to:
1. acid etch/wash
2. apply etch primer (some have highbuild mixed in)
3. bog and sand.
4. paint.

Note that some of the primers have a limited period before top coating is required so read the destructions carefully.
