Been over a week and still going strong. Finally broke down and had a doctor send some antibiotics.., seemingly helping.

I hope and trust you'll feel better soon, Rick. However, this is classic
bad medicine.
The flu virus runs 7-10 days. Anti-biotics will not help since it's NOT a bacteria. If you didn't take the antibiotics it would be getting better by now anyway. Good n' Plenty candy would have had the same effect. All the antibiotic did was irritate your gut by sterilizing it.
Don't get the idea that anti-biotics helped. Next you'll be hounding your doc for ABs for every scratchy throat or allergy-caused sinus issues.
