My refurbished unit has held up fine to buoy racing and some distance racing (Surfside Beach, 3 days at Tradewinds, 3 days at Spring Fever, some big boat racing). I'm not saying its better than a new unit, nor that it won't die on Tybee. But it has the same warranty, is $50 cheaper than a new unit (the 301 has no new features other than USB instead of serial PC interface), and you can practically buy 2 for the price of 1, so WHEN one dies you have a backup. Just my 2 cents.


Both of my 201s came from that source. One locks up occasionally, but fixes itself after the battery dies.The other has worked fine.

On that idea, how about using one of those food-saver type things? You know, you put stuff in the plastic bag, the machine sucks out the air, then heat seals the bag. You could seal it up, then put it in the dry bag. Would be great until the batteries needed to be replaced, I guess.

I do that for my spare batteries and it has worked well so far. I wouldn't want to have to reseal a gps everyday during a Tybee though. We have to carry enough crap along without a foodsaver being part of the program.
