Some people may want to consider just getting rid of the bung-plug all together. Most new A cats, and many newer designed boats just see that as a possible way for water to get in. I think with an older boat, I would just glass/ gel-coat over the hole and be done with it....

Should you need to drain the boat of water after a sail, simply insert a sponge down the inspection hatch.
