I've tried it both ways and found that when they have the tiller we both find ourselves in the same world with the same objectives working together as a team.
Things like keeping the boat flat is over shadowed in the order of priorities by the desire to make the boat go faster or pick the next shift so we can get more boats behind us.
Just the way it works for me.

I know that the voices in my head aint real,
but they have some pretty good ideas.
There is no such thing as a quick fix and I've never had free lunch!
