By your description of spin sheet tension, I can not tell if you might not have been over sheeted. Generally, if the spin luff is not curling to windward every so often, then you are probably stalling the sail.

And how hard is your mainsheet set? Downhaul? Outhaul? The mainsail should be fully powered up with all the leeward tell tales flowing. Don't flatten or sheet hard until the sail begins to luff.
